Customs duty on 2nd suitcase?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I just read that upon arrival to D.F. airport entrants are allowed one suitcase up to 50 lbs. but must pay duty on additional luggage (apart from carry-ons). Does that limitation also apply to those entering for the first time using their RT visa?

I've distilled ALL of my personal effects down to the carry-on and those two suitcases so thought I would avoid the need for a menaje.

How much would customs charge for an extra 50-pounder or might they let me skate because of the RT?

Anything's possible, but this is the first I've heard of such a thing. Are you sure you are not confusing airline baggage limits?

Never heard of this. We've traveled in and out of Mexico City and have never paid duty on an extra suitcase, although we have certainly traveled with more than two.

If you come into MEX and get the red light, you might be charged duty for any goods worth more than $300 USD that you're bringing with you. That's the customs limit for what you're allowed to bring by air without paying duty, but generally it's ignored.

Duty has nothing to do with your INM status, by the way.

I knew about the 50lb. limit imposed by the aerolineas but did a double take when I read this about customs. I looked at so many D.F. info sites today that I can't remember which one exactly. Just goes to show ya that because you read it on the internet you'd best be ready to question the veracity of things.

Thanks for looking out!

My thoughts exactly. Extra bag charge.

I agree. many is the time since 1997 that I have entered Mexico with more than one 50 pounds suitcase. The last time was Saturday. The problem is not the number of bags and weight but what you bring in.

Right now, many airlines are charging large fees when the weight is over, or a little over 50 pounds. I presume that this is what the extra charges are about. When I know the charges will be quite high, you know, I'm traveling with several heavy bags, I go business class. I get upgraded to first class and I never pay a cent for the extra bags. Besides I get free food and drinks. Often by doing so, either I am paying only a few extra dollars for flying first class or I save money. Besides, I like to pretend I am richer than I am. :)
