there have been incidents lately in Cabo San Lucas where Canadian tourists have been caught in crossfire at a nightclub.

That may be the way it was reported in the Canadian press, but it's not what happened. The Canadian tourists shot on January 1st were not caught in crossfire. They were specifically targeted. They also turned out to be "known to police" back in Canada. The other incident involving Canadians in Cabo, which hit the news was last May 2008, also not random, nor did it happen in a nightclub. It was in a hotel room following an argument between one of the victims and his shooter. An American witness came forward on that one.

Canadian press is relentless in hyping up the dangers of Mexico to Canadians, but not everyone seems to listen. :-) Mazatlan is full of Canadian tourists this winter, yet again, having a great time. I have lived here in Sinaloa for nearly 9 years and am still intact.

Sciman,
I mean this in the humblest way...
You can't understand a Nation via the internet.
For whatever Mexico is -- which I don't claim to know-- it's a huge country.
All kinds of goings-on. It's not a Narco caricature.

Thanks to all of you for your comments. They are certainly helpful. Having lived in a few world hot spots over the years we know that often conditions as reported in the media are unrecognizable to the folks "on the ground." Morgaine7, I was particularly interested in your comment as LaPaz is number 1 on our list right now. I may be asking you more questions in another thread. Thanks everyone.

I live in northern Baja but not in the border area. We recently moved further south down to the San Quintin area which is about 4 hours south of the border. We really like it because it is safely distanced from the stuff going on up in Tijuana / the border area, has great year round fishing, inexpensive pacific coast land and still enjoys the great San Diego year round weather. We like it because we feel very safe here, have made a lot of friends and yet we still visited by a lot of family and friends as we aren't too far from the border to make it a major journey to see us...
