As they say down here, it is “a coin in the air” if a JC Penny charge card will be accepted down here. A few years ago we bought some major appliances at the Sears store here in Cuernavaca. Our US issued Sears cards were accepted, but since Carlos Slim bought all of the Sears stores in México, they are two separate businesses. They do have working agreements, and a US issued Sears card may be used here but credit approval, at least for large purchases may not be granted locally, but only by a telephone call to Sears in The US. It is kind of like 1970s technology. The local Sears store only has one telephone capable of making international calls and it always took an hour or an hour and a half for them to get an approval for our purchases. Fortunately, there are several restaurants in The Cuernavaca Mall where Sears is located, and we would go have lunch or coffee for a couple of hours if we had no other business to do at Sears and then go back to Sears to sign the final purchase papers. Things are different down here. We seldom use credit cards, and because of the large amount of fraud here, I haven't used one of our US issued Visa or Mastercards down here in over 20 years. On our few trips NOB I use them quite a bit, just to show some activity. Doris wants to have her JC Penny charge card with her just in case she wants to use it, neither of us know if it will still be accepted in México, They were accepted in the old JC Penny stores in México City 20 or more years ago. We won't know until Doris and her Mom go to México City next month if there really is a JC Penny store there again.
