Coming back

It looks like JC Penny stores are coming back to México. I just read a little blurb about it on this site: http://americanairlines.wcities.com/.../64/95/category.html It says there are now 2 stores in México, at least one of them is in México City in The World trade Center, the address is listed too.

There used to be JC Penny stores in México City, we used to shop there in the mid 1980s. They were all sold, to Carlos Slim I believe, and the names were all changed. I hope they do become well established here once more, in more cities. I have missed them. No really high end stuff, but no junk either. My wife will check the new store out on next months trip to México City. We still have valid JC Penny credit cards. I used to buy most of my work, and everyday clothes there when we lived in Anchorage.

There are many links to other retailers on this site, most of them seem to be in México City, but a little searching will probably find some of them in your area too.

Carlos Slim turned the JCP in Leon into a Dorians and then closed that about a year ago. I hope he brings back Penneys--it was nice in Leon.

I'm not sure that information is correct, as I don't recall a Penney's store at the WTC shopping center. For whatever reason, the J.C. Penney brand did not enjoy consumer confidence. When Carso Group (Carlos Slim's organization) bought out Penney's Mexican operations, most (and I though all, but maybe not) were folded into Sears and Sandborns stores.

Of course, there is no way that I know the accuracy of the report. They do list a street address in México City. It is my wife's home town, so we will know if there is a new JC Penny store there after the first of October, when my wife and suegra make their regular monthly trip there to take care of family business.

If it is there, there will be no way in advance to know if they will be carrying the same product lines as in The US until an inspection visit is done. There were some things that my wife always bought at JC Penny in The US, primarily some lingerie items. She has high hopes, and had me dig out her JC Penny charge card today, just in case.

I don't remember anything bad about the final years, but when we used to patronize JC Penny in the mid 1980s, the stores seemed to be well received and heavily patronized. It is hard to know what happened after Carlos Slim got a hold of them. He managed to just about destroy CompUSA in the United States in a short time and anyone that has had dealings with Sears here knows that it is definitely a different business than Sears in The United States.

I occurred to me later that there IS a Penney´s store at that address. But I don't think it's a trend.

Why any particular chain failed to thrive here is anyone's guess, but I got the sense that they were seen as having Liverpool prices while trying to appeal to WalMart shoppers. The one in DF that you saw, when I think about it, was in kind of toney digs, so maybe THIS one store is going after the right Mexican consumer market now.

And I would not count on a credit card from Penneys issued in the USA to be accepted in Mexico.

I got a Home Depot credit card, NoB, assuming it would be accepted at Home Depot in Mexico, and it is not.

As they say down here, it is “a coin in the air” if a JC Penny charge card will be accepted down here. A few years ago we bought some major appliances at the Sears store here in Cuernavaca. Our US issued Sears cards were accepted, but since Carlos Slim bought all of the Sears stores in México, they are two separate businesses.

They do have working agreements, and a US issued Sears card may be used here but credit approval, at least for large purchases may not be granted locally, but only by a telephone call to Sears in The US. It is kind of like 1970s technology.

The local Sears store only has one telephone capable of making international calls and it always took an hour or an hour and a half for them to get an approval for our purchases. Fortunately, there are several restaurants in The Cuernavaca Mall where Sears is located, and we would go have lunch or coffee for a couple of hours if we had no other business to do at Sears and then go back to Sears to sign the final purchase papers. Things are different down here.

We seldom use credit cards, and because of the large amount of fraud here, I haven't used one of our US issued Visa or Mastercards down here in over 20 years. On our few trips NOB I use them quite a bit, just to show some activity. Doris wants to have her JC Penny charge card with her just in case she wants to use it, neither of us know if it will still be accepted in México, They were accepted in the old JC Penny stores in México City 20 or more years ago.

We won't know until Doris and her Mom go to México City next month if there really is a JC Penny store there again.
