Christmas in Mexico City

Can't Post | Private Reply
This is my first Christmas in Mexico City, but, as someone who has spent many Christmases in the splendor of New York City, I must say, Mexico City is not only exceeding my expectations, but also passing by NYC as far as decorations, celebrations, and ice skating go (you would never find anything free in NY)!

Read up about the events of the "Magia de la Navidad" campaign in Mexico City....

(It also had a great ponche recipe!)

We are considering spending next Christmas and New Years (2011-12) in Mexico City, but one concern I have is how cold it might be. What is your experience this year?

Thanks.

Our past experience of staying in Mexico City around Christmas-New Years is that the nights are cold, but not freezing; the days are cool to mildly warm. Something similar to Morelia. (Haven't been there yet this winter.)

Dress for winter, especially if you plan to participate in any outdoor evening activities. Also, depending on where you stay could have an affect on your day temps. Areas like Condesa (where I have an apartment) with an almost forest-like canopy of tall trees will make your days that much cooler. Recently, I've had friends that stayed in two different bed and breakfasts in the area with varying opinions on the cold. I just bought a portable gas heater for my place, which is surrounded by tall trees. And we sleep with an electric blanket.

Linda, Mexico City IS magnificent during the holidays. I will be in Morelia for Christmas but SUPER excited about returning to the DF for New Year's Eve/Day!

It sounds like it's worth the cold temps to experience the holidays in Mexico City. We'll bring our down jackets!

Maybe it's because I'm from a part of the US where we have "real" winters that I find winters in the DF mild affairs. Though it can get chilly at night, maybe down to 5 degrees C., a down jacket would definitely be overkill. And until the sun goes down, it's warm and pleasant, usually in the low 20s, especially in the sun.

We have been there for Christmas, very nice. What I remember was looking at a major street, maybe 10 lanes wide, with only one car in the next block. Having been there at other times, it felt very strange. Not sure what road it was, maybe Avenida de la Revolucion.

So we liked the DF at Christmas.

Speaking to the choir, but stick to the radio taxis, for security reasons.
