Board Surfing in Nayarit

Can't Post | Private Reply
I'm looking for information regarding the existence and quality of surfable waves in Nayarit from Punta de Mita to San Blas. I've searched this website and found a few things but nothing really substantive.

If anyone could provide info or suggest resources I would be grateful.

Thanks,
gary

We know of tons of surfable spots North of Vallarta to San Blas. That is about as far North as we know much of, so maybe others can pick it up there.

Sayulita has a nice right and a left just off the downtown area. Very regular, sometimes big. There is a thriving surf community there. The next couple beaches up, especially San Pancho, are quieter and do not break as regularly, but are awesome the weeks that they are breaking.

Lo De Marcos has breaks, as does La Penita and the Guayabios areas further North. Seems like there must be untold samaller spots scattered throughout, as well.

Sayulita has two surf shops - Sininen, and I can't remember the other one. Pablo's restaurant on the beach also does surf lessons, surf trips, and fishing trips - they might be a source of info. Costa Azul in San Pancho (aka San Francisco) also has surf camps and surf lessons year-round. They are definitely on the web and might be another good source.

There is a Brazillian guy that was setting up a surf shop in San Pancho when we were last there in May - he seemed extremely savvy. Again, can't remember his name, but his shop is right on the main street not too far down from the Chango Borracho. You'll have no trouble if you try to find it, as San Pancho is very small and sleepy.

Good Luck !!!

Thanks for the good info. It sounds as if a boat trip is in order, especially north of Guayabitos/Penita/Lo de Marcos or any of the beaches that cannot be easily reached from the main road. Does this general area have good waves in the winter (Dec-April)?

If you pick up a copy of surfer mag or go to surfermag.com you can purchase a detailed map of all the spots in Nayarit. It's a four page pamphlet. A lot of the places are hard to find but you just have to pick your way through the jungle and ask questions. I've gone onto private farms and never had a problem. Always shut the gates behind you. The best surf is from about May to October. That is because the south swell is strongest during those months.

Even though the highway does not closely follow the coast, we are surprised at how possible it is to access the beaches. Narrow, steep, dirt roads to be sure, but they eventually get there. We often see a few locals there using the beach, but not using the waves.

A boat would be a great alternative - probably faster. Also, since many of the smaller beaches are really tucked into the selva, you'd see them easier from the water.

In general, this stretch of coast has dependable surf. Sayulita breaks year round, bigger from July-Nov. North of there, San Pancho has a fantastically scenic beach, great for beachcombing and sunset-watching, but non-rideable waves during Dec-July. Then, August to Nov, it randomly goes off, with breaks off each point. And, no one there (ok, a few locals some days). We've seen the beautiful long left breaking overhead all day with only one person out, just yards from town and the beachfront restaurants. We are sure this happens up and down the coast.

Further North, Lo De Marcos and La Penita way, the breaks seem dependable as well, but we have not witnessed what happens in the May-Dec months.

Again, good luck........

Maybe you should consider just a little farther south.

49 KM south of Manzanillo, is the Playa Cuyutlan. From march through May, legend has it that you may have the "Ola Verde" or Green Wave. At any rate the waves are supposed to be great.

You can get there by bus from the Estacion de Autobuses Nuevo near Tonala or from Puerto Vallarta.

I watched a surfing competition there many years ago. Great waves, good surfers, good time.
