I just read the string about turning in your temporary auto permit when leaving Mexico, and I'm still confused. Some people said they turned it in at the border. Some people turned it in a the frontera Aduana checkpoint. Some people didn't turn it in at all and they have had no problem coming across later with another vehicle. I know that consistency is the hobgoblin of something, but I know it sure ain't the hobgoblin of Mexico! So, it's possible all of these people are correct. But that doesn't help me in figuring out what to do. My situation is this: My auto permiso should have been renewed last March, when it expired. My car is such a wreck that I felt there was a good chance it would not make it up to the border and back to SMA. And even if it managed to limp up there and back, it would have cost me about $500 in petrol and tolls (the thing is the king of gas guzzlers). I didn't have that kind of money. I've got enough money for a one-way trip out of Mexico in the thing with my meager possessions and pets. Then I can junk it in Texas. (Wish I could sell it down here, but that ain't legal, and even if I could, I then wouldn't have anything to transport my goods and animales.) I will probably be leaving Mexico soon. If I do come back any time in the future, it is unlikely I will be bringing a car. (Public tranport is much cheaper and safer, as far as I am concerned, and an auto is one of the most expensive indulgences you can have in Mexico if you're living in a city.) The credit card I gave the people at the border is effectively dead. No charges can be made to it now or in the future. So, should I bother trying to find the import bureau in Nuevo Laredo (I have no idea where it is because I brought the car in at Reynosa)? Or should I just forget it and wave adios to Mexico, stickers and all, from Texas? It would be nice to have the option of bringing a car back into Mexico even though I would probably never exercise that option. But is there any point in stopping to check out? After all, the permit is so far out-of-date anyway they would probably fine me, right?
