Are there no overtime laws in Mexico like here NOB?

My poor fiance is working himself into an early grave. I wish I could speed up the process of getting him back up here so he wouldn't have to work 14 hour days M-F and another 8 hours on Saturday for "beans". I guess I should just be grateful that he's in a large enough city that he CAN find work. He told me that if he refuses to work the extra hours then he won't have a job come the next day. I guess we really do have it good here NOB.

There are plenty of employers in the US who hire desperate undocumented workers and then exploit them like this, often refusing to pay them at the end of a job. All too many employers on both sides of the border are willing to do whatever they can get away with, particularly in the currently tough economic times. Labor rights (or any others) only exist to the extent that a person is willing and able to enforce them. Greed is eternal.

Sheila, I wonder what sort of job your fiance has. Mexican friends of mine who have jobs working for private companies or government institutions don't have to put up with the horrible work hours he does. He must have a really dreadful boss!

There certainly are overtime laws in Mexico. For an English-language translation of applicable laws, just ask our dear friend Rolly: http://rollybrook.com/labor_law.htm#WORKDAY.

The problem is in the enforcement. What your fiance says is 100% correct: if he doesn't comply with his employers' needs today, he won't have a job tomorrow. This is one of Mexico's biggest problems: it's called la impunidad.

Oh yeah, we know just how well the illegal immigrants are treated here in the states. My fiance did some work for a "friend" (construction work) and the friend didn't pay the entire crew. And the worst part about it is he's a Mexican immigrant too! But of course he is legal and knows he can get away with it because the guys that are illegal can't do a thing about it. This guy co-owns a couple of bars here in Omaha and a couple of car dealerships besides being a sub-contractor. If I didn't believe in kharma I would totally alert immigration and get him busted, but then at the same time the poor people that work for him would be busted at the same time. Nope, can't live with getting people deported, I know first hand the pain of being separated from your spouse (or in my case, my soon to be spouse), I wouldn't want anyone in my shoes or some poor child being separated from their mother/father.
Hopefully soon my honey can find a decent employer, but for right now, money is money.

Sorry for the rambling, I'm at work drinking my first Coke in about 3 weeks. Major caffeine high.
