A potential problem renewing my residency visa

Can't Post | Private Reply
The Mexican Consulate in my town has just attached the Temporary Residency Visa to my passport. I was approved even though I don't truly qualify on the recently increased financial grounds. The Consul made an exception for me based on the over-all strength of my application in other respects. So I'm home free for that first year but what happens when I present myself for renewal? Might I be booted when a different official notes that my income technically comes up short?

Don't be so sure about the first year .... because you have to report to INM withing 30 days of crossing the border. That's the "different official" you need to see

The approvals given by the Consulates can be based on a number of factors, that include more than the simplest proofs of personal solvencia fiscal. Further, once a Consulate qualifies an applicant for an INM permit, the lNM process in Mexico that occurs is one of fingerprinting, receiving payments, processing the ID etc. This means that the INM does NOT typically re-evaluate applicants fiscal qualifications, once they have been qualified by a Consulate. e.g. I don't think there is a single reported case of a Consulate-qualified applicant having their INM permit application subsequently denied by any INM office, due to re-evaluating the qualifications.

Re next year's renewal: Since no one has gone through a renewal for a Residente Temporal yet, none of us know whether INM will be using:
~ a points system that uses various different categories/qualifications to approve applicants, or
~ only the original personal sovencia fiscal requirement(s), or
~ simply decide on a case by case basis, or on INM agent-choice by agent-choice, or on INM office-by-office policies, or
~ whether most RT renewal applicants will just be waved through, assuming nothing significant has changed in their lives.

If past historical performance/actions are an indication of the future, there will be a patchwork of INM renewal qualification policies that gradually evolve over 6 months to a general national policy (except for a few very independent INM offices, like SMA, who will do their own thing). I personally would guess that as long as people's fiscal situations have not changed significantly, "no proofs of re-qualifications needed" is the most likely future policy on RT renewals.

Much obliged Steve. Your reply has put the wind back in my sails and that sombrero of yours adds an extra dose of comfort to your words. It hadn't occurred methodical me that the new renewal drill is still in uncharted waters since one full year hasn't elapsed since they went into effect. I'd like to pull this off; moving down there. I recently scouted Morelia and environs to see if my monthly moola would suffice and as a certain Hollywood luminary and former governator would erroneously say, "no problemo". Again, thanks so much for giving me the benefit your experience.

If you were in my shoes would you use them to walk into the consulate to inquire about this ?

Another thing is until March 15th they were offering up to 4 year RT visas to newbies. I have a 2 year RT.

Alan, could you provide a bit more detail about this four year approval? I'm so newbie that I haven't even arrived in Mexico yet. You say for example that they "were" offering this approval. Does that mean that they no longer are offering it. How could I contrive to achieve this?

You can not apply for more than a 1 year RT now. They changed thier policy.
