Donating Cement Mixer

Can't Post |
Hi all, I hope someone can help us.

We are a US based charity building schools and medical clinics in impovrished Mexican neighborhoods. Over the last 2 years we've built watertanks and a small clinic with a portable concrete mixer - slow at best.

We have purchased a large (9 cubic yard / 7 cubic meter) concrete truck and need to get it into Mexico permanently. It is parked in El Paso while we research the laws, rules and regulations.

We will not be selling this truck or working for hire, just working for free on our projects.

Any ideas, links or people to talk to?

Also, any ideas re: best overland route to Puerto Vallarta?

John-

I am sure the people of the San Blas/Santa Cruz area could use your truck. I just looked at your website and was moved to tears. The work you are doing is truly important. I see you are in Kirkland. I am in Seattle and run an environmental NPO here called ECOSS. I have contacted my friends in Mexico and will let you know where/if they need your equipment.

Dear jmgilday

I've been to your foundation's installation at the city dump outside of Puerto Vallarta and was greatly heartened by your work there. The men, women and mostly the children are all made richer by your presence. We have signed up to teach English on Wednesdays and look forward to helping however possible.

I noticed that you use a Quad Lock foam block ICF in some of the buildings. Are these available in Mexico? We are building our retirement home in Boca de Tomatlan and would love to use this technique. Also, did you use a concrete pumper or just fill the cavities by hand? What is the rebar configuration for a 6" wall? All in alll, a very cool system and one that would really take off in Mexico if someone would set up a manufacturing plant.

please email me if you have the time, we'd love to connect with you and buy you dinner to repay your amazing generosity.

Insulated Concrete Forms

Thank you for your kind words.

Yes. we are thrilled with the QuadLock system, the only grief is getting it into the country. Our contact in Tiajuana was kicked upstairs in the Fox administration and the new people don't know what to think of these flatbed trailers filled with foam !

Heres the info you need:

FAX

Address

We recommend Quadlock, but research this and you'll find several other manufacturers - some located within 2 days drive.

What we need is to set up a manufacturing plant for the basic panels and plastic webbing - relatively easy - and, once the system catches on, bring the entire compliment of materials into MX.

Guad. has a number of excellent manufacturers capable of tooling up, QuadLock has expressed interest in provding dies.... I'm in at 51%, any other partners interested?

How are the exterior walls finished. I understand the manufacturer recomends stucco. Is that what you plan to do?

Cheers!

Mario.

Please see our thread in 'Construction in Mexico', there will be some construction techniques outlines there

Yes, Stucco is the most common form of exterior finish. It's easy to apply, inexpensive, hardy and blends in well with the architecture of the area. Insects have a hard time making inroads and, since Expanded Polystyrene is non-nutrative, bugs aren't that interested anyway

John,

Importing any kind of vehicle into Mexico is almost impossible. A suggestion, depending on cost, remove the concrete mixer from the truck chasis. The mixer by itself is duty free under Nafta. You can transport it on a flat bed and later mount it on a Mexican truck. Again, it's just a suggestion that perhaps not worth the cost.

John,

I had posted a similar message and somehow got deleted. Possibly my screw up. As you know it is almost impossible to import any type of vehicle. I had suggested, if it's worth the cost, removing the mixer from the truck. The mixer by itself is duty free under Nafta. Transporting it on a flat bed truck to destination and them mounting on a Mexican truck. Or taking a Mexican truck chasis to Juarez and doing it there. Again, just a suggestion, depending on cost.

Mario.
