I never considered Morelianos "crazy drivers," because I'm one of them.....until I took a cab back from the auto mechanic a few minutes ago. 'Tis better to be at the wheel than a passenger, I've decided.

My sincere apologies for calling them crazy. Maybe I should call them inconsiderate, hyper, careless, breaking all traffic laws, with no one around to enforce them, speeding to nowhere, at times knowing that a red light is ahead. In the 45 days that I have been here the taxi drivers have killed 6 persons, to include one of them. I know that the d.f is worst but I was impressed as to how laws are enforced in Merida and pedestrians are not "fair game". The idea of the one by one rule hs been ignored. Im used to stoping in intersections and yielding to pedestrians all my life, but in Morelia, the pedestrians do not have any rights. When I stop for them, the traffic behind me blow the horn or they will go on the opposite direction "near missing them", to get by. 4 out of the 7 days the papaer is published there seems to be a traffic death or injury.

Enough said: Morelia is beautiful, the people are ok, but the traffic and their laws make you want to run, which is what Iam going to do in next 45 days. There are other things to mention like stop lights above 15ft, where they cannot be seen when you are under them, etc., etc, etc.....I gave up building plans and 15 family members, but I value my life and my family's..

Thanks for this wonderful foruma nd to the brave that contribute

Have you lived in Merida for a while? Although I have not lived there, I have visited and have lived here in CAncun for almost 16 years--a much smaller town than Merida--and about 5 months in Chihuahua and I found that driving is pretty much the same as you describe for Morelia. Learning to adjust to that was and continues to be a part of my ongoing adaptation to life in a country other than the U.S.

LOL! My auto mechanic, a Chilango living in Morelia the past eight years, is moving to Merida in two months. He's excited about the move, bought a house there for a fraction of what his house in Morelia just sold for, and, to listen to him tell it, Merida is Paradise. "What about the hurricanes and the heat?" I asked him.

"Oh, 40 degrees in the shade. And it's never cold. The business climate is robust, everything is clean, I mean everything is clean, and I'm escaping the Michoacan mentality," he replied. As he drove from my house in Santa Maria over to his taller behind Chrysler at the peak of the rush hour, he said nothing about the traffic. Maybe it's not worth mentioning. At least it didn't strike me as unusual when I drove back home.

I'm happy that he's following his dream, and I'm saddened to lose one fantastic auto mechanic. (To his credit, he is giving me the names of recommended mechanics.) When Jorge moves, Morelia's loss will be Merida's gain.

FWIW, I think of Morelianos' driving habits as "normal," and it's my reality.

[Note to Moderator: delete this in a few days, since it is off-topic.]

Now, back to wireless Internet providers in Merida and the usual programming!

I'd suggest doing a web search on goodle. DirecPC and a couple of other satellite providers are now starting to sell their service throughout Mexico. I'm pretty sure there should be something in Yucatan. Unfortunately, the Mexican systems do not seem to have integrated TV and internet in the way that, say, providers in El Salvador have done.

Two services now offered only in the DF are supposedly going to be extended nationwide over the next couple of years: Multivision in el D.F. is offering a wireless two-way high speed service using a smallish desk mounted antenna. IUSAcell is offering what is supposed to be a fairly highspeed service.

Offerings seem to be changing quickly.
