water purification systems

Why do I read about water purification and/or pressurification (sp?) in the Chapala forums but no where else? Is it a 'picky gringo" thing? Or is it available elsewhere? I'm not picky, but if it's available, hey, why not? I'm leaning towards Merida, Chicxilub, so, is it available there?

Carlos and Josefina:

You should have no problem finding water purification systems in Merida and/or water pressure tanks if that is what you are talking about. Chicxulub is just a short drive from Merida so that is not an issue. The question down here is why? Purified water of dependable quality is easily available, cheap and probably delivered to your door in 20 liter garrafónes. It will take you years to recoup the cost of any really good water purification system and if you purchase a cheap one as many would suggest, you are taking your chances. As for municipal water, we treat our aljibe with chlorine tablets but we only use that for bathing and household use, not drinking.

Now, if you are talking about some other "gringo" appliances, that´s another matter. We wanted a garbage disposal in our new home in San Cristobal, Chiapas and our, rather sophisticated, architects had never heard of such a thing. We ended up buying one in Guadalajara and driving it down there. We had no problem finding a water pressure tank in Chiapas but, after years of living in Mexico where cheap purified drinking water is always readily available, we couldn´t see the need to purify our water at home. Locals tell us San Cristobal´s municipal water is safe but we no longer drink tap water anywhere.
