Does anyone know from what direction(s) the prevailing winds are for the city of Merida? All the year?

I donīt know what you are after booboo but one of the problems with Merida is that there are no prevailing winds. Thatīs why Meridianos head for Puerto Progreso and Chicxulub in the summer to escape the stiffling city. There is no more hellaciously hot and humid place on the planet than Merida. 90F is cool there. That dreadful climate is the one reason we donīt live in that otherwise great place.

Now, maybe someone else knows from whence the winds come from that never come.

Well.....I'm asking, to try to catch them for better ventilation of the house I am remodeling. We want the best orientation for least sun and most wind; w/ the interiors opened to encourage flow thru air movement.

I get it. We are also remodeling but in San Cristobal the housing is row housing with contiguous walls so we have no choice as to ventilation. It points where it points. Some day we should swap notes on these experiences.

You should ask on Merida Insider but my guess is that what winds there are would be coming off the Gulf, so more or less north from Progresso.

Hurricanes are another matter, Merida gets hit from both sides as they easily pass over the whole Yucatan peninsula. I read somewhere that Merida gets hit more often than any large city in Mexico because the ones in the Gulf get them and the ones in the Caribbean as well. Of course, they are buffered a bit because it is inland a few miles and I don't think there is a lot of huge damage in the city, outlying areas are walloped.

In town the wind travels the East West grid of the city generally. If your house faces North South, there is very little breeze that runs through your home. My house faces North and has ample windows both front and back but very little breeze. Our bedroom upstairs is a heat trap. Downstairs can be O.K. most of the year. Friends who face the other direction say that they do get a breeze upstairs. In Centro you are prohibited from creating windows that look into your neighbors' patio. This is a good thing, but limits your access to creating additional window space. If your house is outside of the downtown and is free-standing then you can probably do whatever you want in the way of windows. No matter which way you face it is going to be hot and hateful some months of the year. Plan for back up air conditioning or excellent fans in any case.

thanks.......I am outside the centro; though w/ neighbors; (I wonder about a "wind scoop"?)
The front room, typ tall, colonial room w/ thick walls........keeps cool well cause of those factors........I'm wondering about some small ventilation openings up high on the wall....to increase the air flow?
