culture in Cancun

In August we will have 4 days to spend in Cancun.. It all looks soo exotic and exciting and its a loong way from Australia :) The hotel and location look AMAZING and while we will spend some time sipping cocktails and looking at the incredible colour of the ocean, Cancun appears to be a big party town with lots of time spent on the beach. We would like to cram as much of Mexico into our 4 days as possible so any advice on avoiding the worst of the tourist traps and anything we should definatly do/ see/eat /drink would really be appreciated.. We dont want to miss a thing!

Tough to recommend too much with just 4 days to work with. Get to the Maya ruin site Tulum early in the day and tour the site. Take your bathing suit as swimming the there is amazing. Another trip would be to Chichen Itza. Ya, everyone and their dog will be there but the ruins are really worth seeing. If you have the time head to the South entrance and wander to the hotel Hacienda Chichen for lunch. The grounds are lovely and you can take a dip in their pool before heading back to your bus. Ask them to open a small museum that has rubbings of various stellae from the site. You can easily see the detailed carvings that are not really visible when viewing the actual stellae. If the local baseball team, Los Tigres, are still in the playoffs then an evening catching a game might be fun. Your hotel should be able to arrange most anything you might want to do.

Coba is a ruin that is not crowded, not restored. We enjoyed it years ago, and our neighbors enjoyed it recently, visiting it on our recommendation.

Valladolid is worth a stop if you are on your way to Chitzen-Itza, visit the church and the cenote. That is a town that is not primarily a tourist town.

Cancun is not the best base for visiting the cultural sites, but it can still be done. Rent a car or sign up for a tour. The Yucatan is one of the easiest areas in Mexico to drive in, I think. Do not drive at night, of course.

It should be mentioned that, with your limited time, you could visit Tulum and Coba in one day if you start early and that is your desire, since thay are less than two hours apart. If you visit Chichen-Itza it will take a full day.

Go spend a day in Puerto Morelos, a short distance from Cancun.

Nice little laid back beach town
