I no longer subscribe to the WSJ so can´t read you article but it just so happens I am a hacienda freak. Not a fancy $1,000US a night hacienda hotel but a huge fan of haciendas - especially if they are somewhat run down and with ghosts. Here are two of my favorites in the Yucatan. YAXCOPOIL On Highway 261 from Mérida yt Uxmal (Uxmal is a wonderful ancient Maya city by the way). Yaxcopoil is a magnificent hemp plantation which, I believe, was still in operation as late as the 1960s. It is now an active museum with photos and furniture from the old days and old industrial machinery itself worth the visit. You must see this place. HACIENDA SAN ANTONIO Located in Sudzal, a few kilometers out of the wonderful "Yellow City" of Izamal. (You cannot go to Yucatan and not go to Izamal. OK, you can, but Bubba will be displeased. This hacienda/hotel is inexpensive (we paid $300 Pesos a night) and a lot of fun. It´s owned by Americans who, thankfully, have not messed with it too much. In my opinion, it is haunted but that does not cost extra. There are at least three good restaurants in Izamal serving Yucatecan food. I cannot recommend the food at San Antonio and suggest you go into Izamal for dinner. That´s just my opinion based on one meal. They will serve you dinner to order.
