Your input on San Cristobal, Chiapas appreciated

I will be visiting San Cristobal starting March 28-April 25. Since I'm only there for a month, I would appreciate any tips, suggestions, warnings, etc about the city, and the region. I am a photographer and writer, so would be interested in visiting villages, photographic possibilities, language school (I speak 'travel Spanish' only), live music venues, libraries, etc. Anything you have enjoyed or found interesting, I'd love to hear about. Thanks for your input.

You should make local inquiry about visiting villages. Some have conflict issues, or are very suspicious of foreigners. Taking photos of the indians is often a no-no. Ask before you take photos.

We loved Chiapas, but I think that it is a place where one can get into trouble. Ask before you go off the beaten path.

thanks for the input. I have heard about the problems with photographing people, ceremonies, and inside churches. But we have that here in New Mexico too, cameras are banned on the Pueblos and in many areas of other native peoples lands. I will be very careful with my camera. I don't want it confiscated either!! It's way to expensive to be risking that way.
