Where do we experience the most of Oaxaca in one month?

Can't Post | Private Reply
We'd like to spend December in Oaxaca and experience the coast and the highlands. We'll have a car and would like to stay in places that will allow us to do day trips into nature. We'd like to stay in an apartment, condo, or bungalow that is reasonably close to restaurants and a grocery store. We like peace and tranquility, except when Mexico is manifesting itself spontaneouly and typically. We're world travellers and have spent over twenty years returning to Mexico because there's no other country that we love more.

I'd greatly appreciate suggestions of places to stay and to see, road travel information, anything. Thanks for all the help and enlightenment that you provide via this Forum. I've planned other trips with this Forum's help.

Hello Theista,

The earlier thread on this forum entitled: "The best thing I ever did in Oaxaca was..." touched on some of these themes.

It's very easy to make numerous nature day trips using Oaxaca City as your base. Less than an hour from Oaxaca City you can be in some very beautiful, mountainous areas. Just mention to the tourism police in the zocalo that your interested in "ecotourismo" and they should be able to offer a number of suggestions and provide you a map outlining various car routes you can take that can make for excellent day trips.

You could spend two-three weeks, using Oaxaca City as your base, and take day trips to the outlying, surrounding villages, and then spend a week on the coast. (e.g. Puerto Escondido, Puerto Angel, Huatulco.)

The following websites look pretty good and offer suggestions regarding ecotourism in Oaxaca.

I thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with me. I just have to find a pleasant and comfortable place to stay in Oaxaca City. I haven't been there since 1990. I'll certainly look into the websites you forwarded. Muchisimas gracias.

I wouldn't go further south on the shore than Puerto Angeles, which has a quaint little beach. Huatulco is a modern resort which they are trying to build into a Cancun. Past there is all ejido land until Salina Cruz. This is a small port city with heavy drug traffic. No restaurants of note. I would pass on this. When I went to Salina Cruz, I was searched by Federales 4 times in one day. The next stop might as well be in Guatemala. So for a loop, either start north at Puerto Escondido and travel to Puerto Angeles, or of course, the reverse.

This is incorrect information in many ways. Please bear in mind that anyone can post here or anywhere without having to establish any credentials. Dawg will be posting more accurate information regarding the Oaxaca Coast on the internet site expatforum.com and I invite you there for a far better guide to this area than the absurd posting I quote above. . You may also get inaccurate information there from people like Tim but not from Dawg. Timīs knowledge of the Oaxaca Coast between Puerto Escondoido and the Chiapas line south of the Isthmus de Tehuantepec is sadly lacking.
