When will Oaxaca settle down??

We live in Sonora and have in the past used our RV for a 4 to 6 week trip to the South. Our all time favorite place is Oaxaca city with San Cristoabl a close second. We did not go last winter but swore this was to be the year. Of course we have been thinnking that Oaxaca is a mistake with all the troubles. I have tried to find out exactly what is happening NOW but most of the on line stuff is either very slanted or out of date. Any Mexconnect persons in Oaxaca? Is it getting calmer? We were to leave the middle of January but would delay that a little if I knew it would be safer. We are not new travellers in Mexico and have been doing this almost 20 years but riots do scare us. Any info appreciated.

Aside from a few quick business trips back the states, I've been in Oaxaca for most of this time period. My family has been here the entire time. I've never felt personally in danger. If you participate in the political rallys and throw rocks at the PFP, then your risk factor increases. Oaxaca is most dangerous for people who were very active in APPO and the protests, as the police are now rounding them up and sending them to prisons out of state. Currently, all of the barracades have been removed and traffic is flowing normally in the city of Oaxaca. The Zocalo loses some of its charm with a few thousand PFP standing around guarding the place, but I believe it's quite safe to travel to Oaxaca right now.

I've posted a couple of articles regarding the situation here not to exagerate the danger, but simply because I find the dynamics of the political situation in Oaxaca to be quite fascinating.

I agree with Walt that one should visit Oaxaca City without fear of personal danger and, in fact, may be pleased to have the town somewhat to themselves now that the hordes of tourists have been discouraged.

We will be driving from San Cristobal to Tehuantepec, Teotitlan del Valle and Oaxaca City next week to help our acquaintances there celebrate and our only fear is that we will be compelled to dance.

We are pleased to see Oaxaca City return to its normal chaotic self.
