From the time you leave the border with Guatemala heading up Mexico Highway 200 through Tapachula to Arriaga and on into Oaxaca State at about the near-border town of Tapanatepec, Oaxaca, the military and federal checkpoints are everywhere and, judging by the high powered weaponry in hand and the close cooperation of the military and federales, if you want to end up as a human sieve, just run a military checkpoint and the federales will blow you away a few minutes later no questions asked. This war is serious along the border. Tapanatepec is a good place to stop for lunch at one of the whorehouse/eateries along Highway 200 and, the nice thing is that somone is always on duty and the food, if you take a shine to Mexican campesino antojitos, is really good. The whorehouses are frequented by federal cops and military guys taking breaks from their duties defending the national honor while exhibiting their own prowess with the ladies who also run efficient guest houses and can be damn fine cooks. Once you leave Tapanatepec you enter the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the place in North America outside of Panama which, believe it or not, is also technically part of North America, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans come closest together and there is a break in the Sierra which causes constant wind flow between seas making this region a perfect place for wind-generated electricity with windmills and overturned big rigs everywhere. There are some interesting stories about the isthmus and the original plans for it to have been the transit point by railway of Atlantic and Pacific shipboard traffic until the United States stole the Panama region from Colombia and built that canal. Tehuantepec itself (the town) is a Zapoteco matriarchal society which is different from other Zapoteco areas in Oaxaca but that is another story. The women there are two-fisted drinkers and entrepreneurs so don´t mess with them. They´ve already cowed their own men and you ain´t gone change that. A fun region with a tough, hot climate. No place is perfect.
