Visiting San Cristobal / November

Can't Post | Private Reply
I will be visiting Oacaxa city and then SCDC for the first time sometime in November/December and would like suggestions of places to stay - something comfortable and modest; I don't speak Spanish but did spend sometime in Guatemala last year and managed fine. It would be great to connect with some of you all who have moved there .

A small bit of free advice; it gets surprisingly cold in San Cristobal during December. Be sure that you get a place with heat. A little electric heater might be enough.

I met someone who said that they had never been colder in their life than when they were in San Cristobal at Christmastime. I think that she was staying in a cheap hotel without heat, and she just got colder and colder. Our experience was not that severe, but our hotel room was an interior room, and they provided an electric heater.

My daughter's experience also. I will try to make SCDC in November . But isn't it possible to get really warm clothes somewhere in town?

I have spent time in SCDC in late November. No question it was nippy. However, it is all relative. I am from Canada where at the end of November it can be very cold. While other people were in hats and heavy jackets we wore light jackets.
The mornings and evenings were chilly but the days were often beautiful and about 70F.
Our casita did not have heat in the bedroom, we did have heat in the kitchen. At night we used 2 comfortors and were toasty.
In terms of hotels check TripAdvisor, they have ranked them.
If you are interested in eco tourism and need a guide PM me and I will give you some info.
SCDC is a magical place, I hope you enjoy it. I keep going back, generally yearly.

I don't think that most people understand that being cold is additive. That is, if you are cold for a couple of hours and then go to a warm hotel room, that is very different from walking on cold streets, shopping in cold stores, and then going back to a cold hotel room. A warm hotel room is important.

We were on a climbing trip one time, and stayed in a two star hotel. There was a cold spell, and the room had no heat, so we changed hotels to get one with heat. We wanted to be warm when we got off the mountain.

One time when I was young I went camping with some buddies. One of them had an inadequate sleeping bag, and he got pretty cold. Previously, he would walk around in a shirt when others were wearing jackets, so he did not usually get cold. He told me weeks later that he was still cold.

As far as clothing, I would suggest wool or synthetic clothing. Bring wool or synthetic long underwear. I remember San Cristobal as damp. Cotton is useless when wet, poor in damp weather, and slow to dry.
