We'll be in Merida for the New Year 2013 and would like to drive from there on Jan. 2 to the closest place to Cancun Airport to swim with a whale shark. If anyone has a good contact for this, we'd really appreciate it. Also if anyone has suggestions about restaurants in Merida, that would be very helpful.

We're in Valladolid now and will depart here on Dec.27 for Izamal. If there are places and restaurants in either town that anyone suggests, thank you for the help. We've been to the arqueological sites and cenotes.

I am pretty sure that the whale sharks are not around those waters except in June thru early September. At those times, yes Isla Holbox is the place to be.

Isla Holbox season = may15th. through Sept.

same with Isla Mujeres

As stated the Whale Sharks are not in season.

The closest place to Cancun airport to see the sharks is to take a boat from Punta Sam or Punta Juarez.

You do not have to go to Holbox but then you would miss seeing a cool little island.
