Troncones beach?

A friend is trying to book a beach rental unit for a family surf trip to Troncones beach in Guerero. Any recommendations, favorable or unfavorable?

Troncones consists of a several mile long dirt road right along the beach, with some nice homes and several bed&breakfast establishments. The dust on the road is absolutely choking, and in some places sits 1 or 2 inches deep on the road. It is super fine dust like sifted baker's flour. Alot of home owners hose down the road in front of their houses several times a day to control it. Troncones is about 25 miles up the coast from Zihuatanejo and and is located about 3 miles off of Highway 200. It is a 1/2 hour drive from Zihua. Most of Troncones faces open ocean surf and is not that good for surfing. However, there is very good surfing at Manzanillo Bay off of the left point. To get to Manzanillo Bay you would take the Troncones pull-off from Highway 200, go 2 to 3 KM to the T, and turn right. Then follow the dirt road for 2+ miles to Manzanillo Bay. There is a nice inn there, right at the point, called the "The Inn at Manzanillo Bay". The beach in the bay has good swimming and excellent body srurfing and body boarding. Most of the surfers, do so at the point.

Unless Troncones has changed it is a dirty hole with pigs roaming the streets. Rocky beach, no garbage pickup and very little water. That was 3 years ago.

Yes, and if you subtract the rocky beach part, your description fits 90% of Mexico. Actually, I don't remember any pigs when I was there in 2003 or 2005. However, I was impressed with the form of the waves at Manzanillo Bay, and the clarity of the water. There were several small rocks (gringo traps) right where the waves broke, just small enough so that you could never locate them for sure. The body surfing was kind of like russian roulette. I also liked the lack of tourists. The Inn at Manzanillo bay is a great place to stay.

We liked Troncones a lot - we were there last year. Laid back, friendly, close-knit community, and wide sand beach. There are quite a few rentals there. We stayed at Casa Gregorio, owned by brothers Greg in Seattle and Ernie in Troncones, US Tel: 425.228.2400 or 206.898.8319. Ernie in Mexico: 755.553.2936 or 755.558.3672. Web page: http://www.choice1.com/...regorio.htm?CID=5631 E-mail: casasgregorio@yahoo.com. $90/night (2005), high season, lots more for their 2-bedroom casas. Off season area prices are considerably lower. I recall there were some lower priced rentals there also, but some didn't want us because we travel with dogs. The real estate prices have shot up there, so rental rates have also.

Que le vaya bien,
Jane W
