Transporting Household Goods To Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
I only have one quote so far to ship household goods to Mexico but it's $2,500 for a 4' x 7' x 7' (200 cu. ft.) container maximum 1000 pounds. Additional would be at a lower rate. Geeeeeeesh!! I don't think i've got 1000 lbs of anything worth $2,500. I don't have very many gold bars. I figure $2,500 would go a long way towards buying new in Mexico.

My plan 'B' is to load what I can in my car and car top carrior and sell the rest.

Has anyone had any better rates or options they have used?

I have one friend who lugged all her stuff, including furniture, to the border in a rental truck/trailer and offloaded it at a customs broker who then hired a trucker from San Miguel de Allende to drive to the border and bring the stuff down to her at her new home. The broker was about $300 or so and the truck was another $500. Regards, Michael

How about bringing a small enclosed trailer hitched to our SUV with personal goods (no furniture)? Is that possible? We can buy a trailer a lot cheaper than the quote of $2500.

When you do the trailer thing - is there an average time that is spent on the border while they are looking at your stuff? Do they always look in all your boxes? Txs!

I did the trailer thing (no menaje de casa) and spent 1 minute being inspected at the border and 2 minutes being inspected at the 20 km checkpoint. The trailer contained 7600 lbs. of stuff.

I thought that if you get an FM3 and take your household goods you need a 'menaje de casa'? What is the purpose of the menaje de casa then?

We plan to get an FM3, move and tow a trailer about 9 feet long, 6 feet wide and tall. Moving only bed mattress, desk, our electronics (tv, vcr, etc..) and about 30-40 boxes of kitchen and personal stuff. Are we going to need a menaje de casa then?

The menaje de casa is a household inventory which gets your the permit to temporarily import your worldly effects duty-free.

You really should have a menaje. You are probably not going to be lucky like Johnv. Every once in a while the customs guys bestow a great good fortune on someone -- but don't count on it.
