Sorry I am not the fanatic of which you speak but: There is a carnival in Cancun and it gets better every year. As you know Mardi Gras/Fat TuesdayCarnaval and its celebration is based on history and religion...mainly Catholic. Many cities in Mexico with history have good celebrations...primarily Veracruz. Not to mention the local "ferias" and parades and processions in the pueblitos around the country. Cancun, as a fairly new city with no history and beign comprised of people from all over Mexico and the world has not had...up until recently...enough people who get together to support the blood, sweat and tears of putting on a good celebration. They have been trying for the last 15 years that I know of and what failed for several years and then started off with a couple of pickup trucks loaded with balloons and kids has gradually developed into a real Carnaval celebration. It is not made by or for tourists although those who have been here at that time during the last 2-3 years have participated. A sense of community is finally growing among the "cancunences". Because of other close celebrations in other towns around here...Cozumel, Isla, Tizimin to name a few...the dates are flexible...the actual date is March 4 this year with activities usually starting the weekend before the Tueday. I will get the exact dates and post them later for the celebrations here in Cancun but planning is already underway and this year looks to be better than ever...with or without tourists. As for the $6 usd beers, I bet there are places where you live that charge that much...you just donīt go there. Same here. If you know where to go, you can get $.50 beers if you want to get out of the hotel zone. Which by the way you can do for only about 50 cents U.S. on the bus...unless you want to take a taxi.
