The Santa Maria Parador Museo at La Trinitaria

There was a discussion of favorite breakfasts under the Mexican Kitchen Forum in which coffee was being discussed and someone mentioned the ubiquitous Nescafe, the regional coffee of southern Mexico (in fact, most of Mexico) where all the great coffee is exported and, generally speaking, coffee is not particularly appreciated.

This reminded me of one of my favorite places. The Santa Maria Parador Museo at Km 22, Carretera La Trinitaria-Lagos de Montebello south of Comitan de Dominguez in Bubba´s favorite state of Chiapas. This is near the Guatemalan border. in a delightful region and this hacienda and museum of ancient Spanish art is a wonderful place to stay.

What the Kitchen Forum reminded me of is that, at least when I was there a couple of years ago, they made a delicious drink with Nescafe that blew me away. They make a buttery concoction with Nescafe, thick cream and sugar and, if you order a cappuchino or something akin to that that is what they serve you. They take this concoction and serve it over hot milk which you then stir and damn is that good. With a bit of brandy, one is in heaven.

This hacienda is within a pleasant drive of the Lagos de Montebello, the crystal clear but multi colored lakes along the Mexican-Guatemalan border. A great place to stay and they serve (or served as it may be) a fine breakfast with this Nescafe concoction that will change your mind about a product what you may previously have thought to have been mediocre.

When we were there the prices were quite reasonable. They have a web site.

We spent several hours on the road right about there on our return from Guatemala last year. There was a demonstration that shut the highway down. It was a good time and they opened it up again in a few hours instead of waiting until 6am the next morning as originally stated. The local bar was doing a booming business as were the vendors that appeared quickly. We were several miles back from the actual demonstration so I didn't see it. Because of the delay we ended up spending the night behind a Pemex in Comitan, they charge you $30p and you can park in a guarded, fenced lot with the trucks on one side and us - the only RVs were our friends and us - on another side so we didn't have to smell the fumes. Very nice restaurant next door as well.
