The NEWS is here

Having read press releases about the start-up of an English language newspaper in Mexico, it appeared that Oaxaca was not on the distribution list, but today, lo and behold....drum roll....there's THE NEWS tucked among other periodicals. It's a 31 page tabloid size format with quality color photos on almost every page. I get most news on the Internet now but am old-fashioned enough to appreciate a newspaper.

I heard the hype a couple of weeks ago too. The website is http://www.thenews.com.mx/home/default.html

Let's see if the print version makes it this time. I read it for years 20 years ago until it went under. There are probably more English-speaking expats in Mexico now than then but with their use of internet, I am not sure how long any print medium will survive. Time will tell.

About 6 or 7 years ago I can remember standing in line in the zocalo before 11 a.m., waiting for the News to come. I think the vendor just care. There were never enough copies. So, back then there as more demand for it than supply. Then a few more newstands got it and finally the bookstore ALWAYS had a copy. With its demise, no doubt more of us got accustomed to getting our news on the Internet, even the crosswords. I don't hold out much hope.

Yes Geri, there is some very good writing on the internet, including your own, but you can't use a day-old web story to line a birdcage.

Funnneee! My birds are in the trees in my front yard, but I'm glad you agree that the web doesn't "do it" tactile-wise (is that a word?). Thanks for your kind words. I couldn't find The News in the bookstore where I bought the old news. They say it's in the zocalo. Vamos a ver. Did you find it, buy it?

I get any news of importance/impact in our English/language library. :-) I graduated from Memphis State University, a bit of trivia not known (or believed) by mostg people.
