My favorite hotel in Taxco is the Posada de la Mision, really nice, great view of town from the new section. My second choice would be the Monte Taxco, up on a hilltop looking over the town/valley, excellent but a bit further removed from shopping. But I stayed in those hotels back in the days when our travel budget was a bit flusher than it is now. These days we stay at the Santa Prisca, which is kind of mid range, clean but spartan, a block or so off the Zocalo. As far as shopping goes, you can hardly throw a (cobble)stone in Taxco without hitting a jewelry store. You will have no trouble finding many, too many to try them all. To give you an idea, get yourself to the Zocalo. Take a taxi or micro (VW bus), don't drive. The micros have the side sliding door removed for easy access, so hang on when he goes around a curve. All around the Zocalo, plus a block and a half back on all sides, every other door is a jewelry shop. Looking at the (beautiful) church of Santa Prisca, there's a narrow street/alley that runs diwnhill along the right side (as you are looking at it) of the church. Full of jewelry shops all the way to the bottom of the hill. btw, take a tour of the church, it's beautiful. Get a guide. Go one block past the Zocalo to the little plaza where the micros all stop. Get one that says "Panoramica". Stay on 'til the top. You get the best view of Taxco from up there. Find time to have one evening meal at the restaurant "Ventana de Taxco". It's in a hotel slightly out of town. Take a taxi. Dynamite view of the city all lit up in the evening. Back to the Zocalo, start walking counterclockwise back along the route that the micros take to reach the Zocalo. This street is also full of jewelry shops. Careful, it's narrow and packed with traffic (although usually slow because it's jammed). At the bottom of the hill you reach what I'll call the main highway/road through Taxco. All along this stretch are more jewelry shops. Some people think that the shops along this stretch and the ones actually fronting on the Zocalo are the most expensive. Personally I've not been able to tell the difference. Taxco is Fran's favorite destination in Mexico. We've been there more than a few times. Could you tell? Pack lots of money, or lots of self control. Regards E&F
