This Saturday morning about 7:00 AM Luis Estavillo Chávez, owner of Los Portales and Onix Restaurant in La Crucecita, will attempt to swim the length of the “Nine Bays” of Huatulco. Recently, Luis wrote to me and said, “We are counting the days for my next swim attempt which will be this next Saturday, May 24th. Me and my training team have been working hard since this past December and are looking forward to a successful swim of the whole 9 bays, approximately 22km about 14 miles.” Some readers may recall that Luis tried to swim the Nine Bays once before, but it was the weekend of “Mean Hurricane Dean,” and he was forced to leave the water early. See -- http://tinyurl.com/3bl9dd -- for a previous report in my Blog. Depending upon weather and sea conditions, Luis will probably start at San Agustin beach about 7:00 AM and end between 3:00 and 4:00 PM at Conejos beach. Of course, his strength and skill will determine the actual time needed for the planned swim. Luis (and his spouse Elva) is sponsoring this event in part to draw attention to the needs of children in the mountains high above Huatulco. Luis and his family have focused their energy and resources on the village of San Felipe Lachillo which has many children living in extreme poverty who are in need of basic services so they can participate in educational programs. About once a month, Luis and some of his family members travel to San Felipe and personally do what they can to help the children succeed. Here is a photo of Elva helping with some hair washing that was followed by hair brushing and haircuts for both boys and girls –
Recently, the school breakfast program got a roof so the children’s breakfast program now has a formal “cookhouse” as seen in the next photo –
So, this Saturday is the big day. My spouse and I will be “on the beach” to see Luis enter the water and waiting for him at Conejos beach to congratulate him on his success. Perhaps, some of you would like to join us “on the beach” and give him all the support we can muster. You can also “support” the children of San Felipe by making a pledge something like suggested below – SPONSORSHIP PER BAY: $10, $15, $20 for every bay that Luis swims. SPONSORSHIP PER KILOMETER: $5, $10, $15 for each mile or km that Luis swims. SPONSORSHIP PER HOUR: Pledge $10, $15, $20 for every hour during the swim. ************************************************************************ In order to donate and receive a tax deductible receipt, send your check after Saturday’s swim to – CoCB %Tami M.
