San Cristóbal de Las Casas

When you awaken in this town at 7,000 feet at, let´s say, 7:00AM, low valley fog portends a splendid day in the dead of winter and, while nothing is certain in this realm, you can probably look forward to that fog lifting sometime prior to 10:00AM and thereafter you may be almost certain that there will be splendid and almost unbearable crystal sunshine and blue skies and temperatures in the 70s Fahrenheit and it is beyond anything you ever imagined could exist on this planet with extraordinary clarity of sunlight defining fine colonial buildings - some in ruins and some marvelously restored - and then you can stroll over pedestrian-only boulevards to El Jardin and listen to the municipal marimba orchestra and thank God you are, so far, alive and, despite that fact that you are old and decrepit, you are as alive as you have ever been in your life in this marvelous place and it gets no better than that.

Actually, Dawg shoud have said more about San Cristóbal de Las Casas than simply praising its brilliant sunshine and crystal blue skies skies and stunning colonial architecture in magical colors. Earlier, Dawg had inferred that the only place in Mexico where one could enjoy a cheese whopper from Burger King while simultaneously indulging in an alcoholic beverage such as a margarita, was at the Guadalajara airport and that was incorrect.

So, the next time you are visiting San Cristóbal, here is what you do. Stroll down the Andador heading east to west between the old Santo Domingo convent and the plaza principal known locally as El Jardin and a couple of blocks before the cathedral you will see a Burger King, properly discreet without ostentatious signage, on your right and what you do is you go in there and buy yourself a cheese whopper or other Burger King treat to go and then exit the Burger King and straight in front of you you will spot La Revolución bar and Jazz Club where you can buy a cocktail or straight up booze pump and then you can take that whopper and that drink in a plastic glass back onto the Andador and enjoy this repast on one of the public benches situated thereabouts without fearing public recrimination because this is Chiapas so don´t think you are back in Toledo.

Hound Dog, this description straight from your heart is far better than any photograph I could take if I ever make it back to San Cristóbal in this lifetime!

¡No hay de qué!, Don Sabueso. I look forward to reading more of your word-pictures of San Cristóbal.

My favorite remembrance of San Cristobal is the scalding hot coffees liberally laced with Kahlua in the freezing cold bus station!
We always managed to get to the station well ahead of our bus and chased the chill quite admirably.

If you think the bus station is cold in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, try the hospitals and diagnostic laboratories and doctors´ waiting rooms and, by God, there is no booze of any kind with which to to warm up in those places . Here this town is on the border with Central America but at an altitude of 7,000 feet and nobody born and raised there even knows it is as cold as a witch´s butt. When we remodeled our home (well, actually, ruin) there, we put in fireplaces and propane heaters everywhere and the locals thought we were nuts. They use propane or wood to cook with, not heat their houses.

Try lying on a plastic diagnostic table to have your innards x-rayed when its, I swear 40F in there in July and those bastards leave you lying there freezing for 30 minutes and you will know cold, brother.

Reminds me of a story told by an old boyfriend of my wife´s in Paris. He was from Tunis and told us he had never been so cold in his life as in Tunis because nobody had heat. I now understand that lament.
