Responsible Tourism Fair, Oaxaca

A group of friends in Oaxaca, Mexico are creating the Responsible Tourism Fair (January 17-30), our 10th event since 2001 and a veritable model of frugality and slow travel.

Participants have a number of options, including weaver-guided walks in Teotitlán del Valle, photosafaris in public parks and authentic indigenous meals including Caldo de Piedra (Chinanteco), Maatsy (Mixe) and tamales (Zapotec-style). Self-guided treasure hunts asks foodies to try various cheeses, chocolates and mezcal. Photographers are invited to share photos in relevant Flickr Groups with prizes to be awarded at the end of the fair.

If you cannot attend in person, there are many ways to participate online wherever you are. We are inviting our responsible tourism buddies to create your own RT event during this time and share the news via Flickr, Twitter, YouTube and all of the cool toys and and tools of Web 2.0.

updating the program

Hound Dog asked some good questions elsewhere in this branch. Not to repeat that discussion, I'd like to ask members of this forum specifically, do you have any suggestions for events you'd like to see at this year's fair?

We have some really wonderful food tastings set up as well as photosafaris and treasure hunts (we provide a checklist for you to discover and photograph on your own). We'll highlight local restaurants and invite folks to the markets. Local business owners including restaurants and hotels are encouraged to put up signage for the event and to highlight specific options for their guests.

For those of you not in Oaxaca, we invite you to join us in the relevant Flickr Groups and post pictures of what you consider responsible tourism in your corner of the world. In short, we're getting ready to have a lot of fun and I hope you can join us. The program will be updated each day during the fair (January 17-30).
