there was an article in the NY Times Sunday travel section about Puerto Escondido. I don't know how to insert the URL here. Google NY TImes Puerto Escondido if interested. It's about the real estate frenzy, which is truly amazing (and puzzling) to me.

Hey Geri, I hope you are enjoying your vacation in the sun. I envy you. Here in usually beautiful Mazatlán it barely gets up to 70F during the day, and is pretty chilly at night (without any heat source in the house except the stove). This has been going on for about a month now! Meanwhile, I am thinking about the vegetarian enchiladas I ate in Pto Escondido many years ago at the Santa Fe (? is that right) hotel and restaurant. They were so good. Have you eaten them and if so will you tell me (us) what is in them? Maybe I will try to recreate them.

Any waves happenin down there? Sure would love to see a few fotos of the surfing there. What a place!

Waves are pretty big here on Playa Zicatela by my standards, red flag up each day warning swimmers, but surfers say it's only "so so" right now. The bars here have amazing videos running all the time of the surfers...absolutely incredible...I'd take some photos and post them but don't know how to do it.

I see a lot of people walking the beaches with binoculars looking at birds, but I think the real birders (and birds) are at places like Laguna Manialtepec and Chacaue (sp?) which I hear is fab (but developing). However, I didn't get there this time around. There were thousands of birds on the river in La Barra (the southern/eastern part) the other day, an absolutely beautiful and isolated spot, but still there was a shack with Coke and Cerveza near the nature reserve. :-)
