Progresso clean up

Can't Post |
Hi there,

Does anyone know what the current status is of the clean up in Progresso after the hurricane that hit in September?

We are planning to visit in the winter and have heard that the beach front homes are quite damaged. I am wondering when they expect life to get back to normal.

It is going to take a year or more to get "back to normal" in much of the Yucatan. Some of the smaller villages aren't expected to get power for 6 or 8 months yet. We haven't driven out to Progresso yet....when we do (maybe next week-end) I'll post what we see. What we have seen on the local television news is that Progresso is working very hard on its clean up and they do have power and water there. As far as some of the beach houses...those closest to the water did sustain a lot of damage. I guess it will depend on each owner how quickly repairs are made. Isidore ripped this area apart. It is difficult to fully decribe the damage, but tourism is very important to the economy and ever effort is being made to make things comfortable for vacationers. Come on and enjoy your vacation. Just be prepared to be shocked when you see the changes Isidore brought us.

Thankyou LeAnn for your response. We are planning to stay just outside Chicxulub, an area that we love, in March. Our villa that we have rented is on the beach. I agree about the tourist dollars being important. There are not a lot of tourists, but we do help the area a small bit. Thank you for offering to let us know an update when you drive to the area. I will be looking for your posting. Have a nice day.

Hello Vanna,

I, too, live in Yucatan-Celestun. We fared very well but the beach towns like Chixculub, Telchac Puerto on the Northern side were hard hit. I would make sure that the villa you have rented is in good condition. Heard that friend of friend had 3 feet of water in his Chix beachfront home. BUT, I have not seen this for myself! Maybe ask landlord for dated photos?

We drove out to Progresso and points west on Sunday as planned. Of course, this time of year it is all very quiet. Most of the downed trees have been cleaned up or at least pulled off to the sides of the roads. There are still power and telephone lines down. Many light standards are damaged. As far as the beach front houses are concerned, most looked fine, but that is only a visual from the outside when driving by. We did walk on the beach for a while and there has definitely been some erosion. I think that the best advice is to check on your particular rental with the owner. One up side of all that wave activity......LOTS of sea shells! Enjoy your trip!

Vanna... I tried sending you a private reply but I don't know if it went through so I'll reply here as well.

We arrive in Progreso/Chicxulub area on New Years Eve. If you let me know which condo or house you stay at I will check it out for you and take some pictures. We have an internet account down there so I can can send some pictures to you via e-mail.

You can contact me at dgrundy@multired.net.mx after January 3 if you would like me to send you pictures.
