Police & other corruption in Mexico

Police corruption in Mexico seems to be very widespread. They look for any pretext. For example: My friend goes to Playa del Carmen & Tulum regularly. He's been stopped while driving several times for no apparent reason. When leaving the airport there's a police station on the first turn to the highway. That's a favorite trap. He was stopped for speeding, failure to stop at sign all of which were untrue. He argued with them pointing out there's a speed bump, he couldn't possibly have been speeding. They looked inside the car looking for any violation. Once a passenger was not wearing a seatbelt so they cited him for that. The car rental company recommends if they ask for your licence don't give it to them; just show it otherwise you won't get it back without a bribe. If they say they'll take you in say, ok, let's go. They're looking for naive tourists who won't put up a fight and just give them a bribe. The more you argue with them the more likely they'll let you go or settle for a few pesos.

Also be careful at gas stations. They often overchage you. Sometimes the pump doesn't start at 0 so make sure you check before the attendant pumps. Also they can add the previous customer's amount so always check. Also check your change carefully. Just tell them, give me 200 pesos, show them the bill and there's no question about change. I'm sure there are many other examples. Yes, there's corruption everywhere but Mexico seems to have it down to a science.

Everything you say is true. It is true in Mexico and in most countries. It happens often in the States especially with non-english-speaking tourists. I remember a few years ago, Florida changed the law so that car rental companies could stop using special license plates for their rental cars. The license plates were great for police, thieves and others just shouting out "TOURIST!"

Be careful when traveling. ANYWHERE.

Feliz Navidad to all!!
