Greetings, everyone. New member saying hello. Found this place whilst searching for a bookstore in Oaxaca.

Traveling through southern Mexico for the first time, taking pictures without local knowledge or editorial direction. I invite you to take a look.

Got to San Cristobal via Guatemala, spent some days in Escondido and just arrived in Oaxaca. Any recommendations for a low-budget local itinerary here? Are cheap car rentals possible here and, if so, is that the best way to see the area? Was feeling a bit hemmed-in in Cristobal - tried renting a scooter there but it was pretty range-limited.

Thanks in advance. Be well!

Michael, I think you'll find car rentals quite expensive in Oaxaca and then you'll have the challenge of where to park it when not using it.

Transportation is abundant and cheap in Oaxaca (city, I assume even though your wonderful photos were of the surf). If you walk down Calle Bustamante south of the zocalo, you'll find small bus terminals going to various pueblos. The cost is very cheap, under 10 pesos. These taxis and mini-buses leave frequently serving the hundreds of pueblos within an hour of Oaxaca. There are also terminals in other parts of the city and you can catch a colectivo taxi or bus near the sport stadium on the highway, for points east. There are also two taxi colectivo stands near Abastos market in the southwestern part of the city. It's very busy in that area but you'll find CHEAP public transport to everywhere. You can take a city bus marked CENTRAL to get to the general area and then look around or ask where the "colectivo sitios" are. They have their destination painted on the side and they only shuttle between Oaxaca City and their particular pueblo.

Linda Martin sells the best detailed map of where the bus and taxi stands are, including city bus routes. Her email is: ridgecliff@hotmail.com. These are on sale at the OLL Library, Pino Suarez #519 for 40 pesos. The govt. doesn't have a city bus route map, but you might want to pick up a map of the pueblos at the tourist office on Independencia near the main cathedral in the zocalo.

I've lived in Oaxaca more than 10 years without a car and have managed to get just about anywhere. Note: Most of the indigenous folk in the villages don't have cars, so there's plenty of cheap public transport. It might take longer than driving yourself, but a lot less hassle. Public transport doesn't run late at night. I try to get out of the villages of 5 or 6 p.m. to be sure to catch a ride back to the city.

Keep those photos coming!

Thanks, geri, for the detailed reply. Very thoughtful.

And for the reality-check regarding car rentals. Once I get settled in and sorted out here, I'll start investigating those buses.

No worry about more photos. I'm addicted. Hope to have a new essay up by tomorrow.

Cheers,
Mike
