Parking in Playa del Carmen

Can't Post | Private Reply
I'm desperately searching for an idea how to find secure parking in Playa del Carmen so that I won't have to take my car across with me when I visit Cozumel next week.

Does anyone have any suggestions, know of a hotel that I might pay to use parking lot, or anything?

Thanks for any help.

OK, I asked the guy here who answers these kind of questions for our guests. He says the parking lot on Calle 2 and 10th Ave will let you arrange for secured long term parking. It will probably take someone who can speak a little spanish to let them know when you will be back and perhaps pay some of it in advance.

Here are some directions. One of the main streets in Playa running from highway 307 to the sea, is Avenida Juarez. Calle 2 is one block to the north of Juarez.

***Juarez is under repair right now but west bound is open and some of eastbound but only the first block off the highway. This makes it more difficult to give you directions as I don't know whether it will be open or not when you get here. Adding to the difficulty is that streets in that area are mostly one way, including Calle 2 which is one way away from the ocean. I can't remember if 10th Ave is 2 way its whole length, I think it is. I know it is 2 way farther north ***

The main tourist street - closed to traffic and one block off the beach - is 5th Avenue which is one block east of 10th Ave. The streets in Playa run in even numbers east west and odd numbers north south and the ones running north/south are Avenue 5th 10th 15th 20th, etc. There isn't anything in between these, ie no Avenue 6th. East/west it goes Calle 2, calle 4, calle 6, etc. Almost all of the east/west or Calles are one way. Many of the north/south or Avenidas are either one way or closed to cars. 10th is the exception in the north part of town, I believe that it stays 2 way the whole length. I'm not down at the southern end very often, I'll look if I'm in playa again before you leave.

So, assuming no construction this would be the way to get there. Turn towards the ocean from the highway on Avenida Juarez. Pass Avenida 25, Av 20, Av 15 and turn left on Av 10. Go one block and look for the entry to parking on the right far corner as you cross Calle 2. There was a high stone wall around it the last time I was there if I'm thinking about the same parking lot. There is also another lot behind the bus station at the corner of Juarez and Av 10. Roberto recommends the one I've told you above for long term storage but I think they would both do it.

From here, you are about 3 blocks from the ferry. The intervening steets are mostly closed to cars so a taxi might not help much. There are pedi-cabs at the bus station usually (bus station at Av Juarez & 5th Av) and they would be the best way to get your luggage to the ferry. If you see a pedi-cab as you are driving to the parking lot, ask them to follow you. Remember to let the parking guys know how long you will be gone so they don't think you have abandoned the car.

***IF there is construction and they force you to turn off Juarez, usually at Av 20 which is one way to the left. Go to Calle 4 which is one way to the right (towards the sea) and go down to Av 10, turn right and look to the near left corner as you approach Calle 2 for the lot.

Why is it so easy to 'show' someone how to get somewhere but so difficult to write it? Reading over this it sounds a LOT more complicated than it really is. Playa is not that big a city and you are only going 5 blocks from the highway. This isn't a real city like Guadalajara and they are used to tourists driving around because they don't know where they are going. Also, there is usually a transito on every corner of Av Juarez.

***edited to add that the transitos on the corners of Av Juarez are directing traffic, not looking to pull you over. It's a town that lives on tourism and they don't target the tourists for petty stuff, they are actually helpful.

You are my hero. Everyone can now ignore my pathetic pleas for help in finding a place to park in Playa del Carmen.

My spanish should be sufficient for the task you describe. It is pathetic, but it did get me through a whole lot of back trail Costa Rica and does get me through a lot of Mexican villages where there are no signs telling one how to get to the next town. Your directions seem quite clear, as are all of your helpful postings.
