Paa Mul

I am looking for anyone who has personal experience with or knowledge about the expatriate RV/palapa community in Paa Mul. I am particularly interested in finding out who we might talk to regarding the availability of these sites for sale. We have been in contact with the wonderful owners of the dive shop there, but were hoping there might be additional sources of information.

I'm familiar with it, yes. We winter about 12 miles down the coast and are in and out of there several times a season to use their dump.

You do realize that you are only buying a lease and the buildings on the land, not the land? If (some would say when) the owners decide to put in a resort, they can kick you out with no real recourse.

That said, there was one facing the beach that was for sale last year for $25k. It had a pole barn type building and a trailer. I thought that was pretty exhorbitant and it did sell but I have no idea for how much.

I'll be there around the first or second week of December and if you are still looking, email me and I'll go over and ask around.

Thanks for your reply, sfmacaws. Yes, I understand that we would only be purchasing a lease on the land and purchasing the structures on the particular space.

I think you are in Akumal, correct? That is one of our favorite places to visit. We spend a week or two at Las Casitas every couple of years. We were there in Sept. and did our diving with the shop in Paa Mul. We talked with some people who lived or wintered there and that is when we became intrigued about acquiring a place there.

If you have a chance to check into it further in December, I would be very grateful. Thanks for the offer.

I'll be happy to go and check it out. We have some friends who lived there for years but a couple years ago they bought a condo in Puerto Aventuras. They are still friends with many people there and I'll ask them when I see them.

We started out about 10 or 12 years ago coming down to dive and staying in Las Casitas. It became our favorite dive destination and we started making friends and ... well, we ended up buying a condo about 5 years ago. It's a great area, there is nothing like the Caribbean.

When we were there in September, we noticed some construction going on on the west (?) side of the highway. It looked like some kind of housing/community project. Do you know where I'm speaking of? If so, is it a new condo project or what?

Could be, I don't know. We left in April and I don't remember it. Things go up really fast there, I'm amazed at how quickly they build.

H Lisa
The place west of the highway and between Paamul and Puerto Aventuras is a housing project. I was told that it is meant for Mexican Nationals as it may be partially subsidized but I am not 100% sure about that.

I was there three weeks ago. There are probably 1/2 dozen palapa/trailers for sale, ranging from around 25k to 70k. You can also rent your own space and have a palapa built.

There are some photos under the Playa del Carmen link on my website

Jonna, we didn't get in touch. Got down there and adopted a local attitude. Was difficult to plan more than 30 minutes in advance :).

I absolutely understand! In fact, we didn't get down there ourselves. We are still near Guadalajara and will be heading for Melaque and Perula this week.

Did you enjoy Isla Contoy? I saw the pictures on your web site. Did you stay there or go on a day trip? It's a place I haven't been down there and I've wanted to go.

Nice photos.

We enjoyed Isla Contoy a lot. There are only day trips, and they are limited to a couple of hundred people a day. It is a nature preserve (lots of birds). Some staff live there and there is a visitor center with exhibits and a palapa on the beach, but those are the only structures.

We went with Captain Tony from Isla de Mujeres - whose father and grandfather were lighthouse keepers on Mujeres, Holbox and Cozumel Great guy!! His brother Mario was along and we had a great time - stopped for snorkeling on the reef along the way.

Hey, thanks for that info. It sounds like a trip we'd enjoy. We aren't real organized about it but we consider ourselves birdwatchers and love to go where there are lots of birds.

There are trips from Cancun, so you don't have to cross to Isla de Mujeres in order to go :).
