Oaxaca's Rural Tourism Fair 2008

Can't Post | Private Reply
Greetings, everyone

Here's the annual heads-up and invitation that we are hosting a grassroots tourism fair in and around Oaxaca City, January 21-30. The event is co-hosted by Instituto Amigos del Sol and Planeta.com.

In 2008 the fair changes from a one-day event at Amigos del Sol to a nine-day event held at various locations in and around Oaxaca City. Our motto: think smart, travel slow! There will also an international component featuring responsible travel and ecotourism in Australia and New Zealand.

There will be guided and self-guided tours focusing on artesania, biking, coffee, energy, food, markets and Oaxaca's historic and notable trees. If you cannot join us in person, share photos of rural tourism where you live in the popular Rural Tourism Flickr group.

I wish I were there to join you. Why don't you explain Stone Soup to this forum? I think it's one of the most interesting foods of Oaxaca, right up there with grasshoppers and chocolate chicken!!!

Great question. Here's the background.

Caldo de Piedra is run by the Gauchupin family from San Felipe Usila. The palapa-style restaurant is located on the north side of the highway, kilometer 11.9 heading to Tule from Oaxaca City. The restaurant serves Chinanteco cuisine, including the famous Caldo de Piedra, literally 'stone soup' made with fish, shrimp and a few fire-hot stones. The dish is individually prepared -- ideal for those who cannot consume shrimp, the ingredient is simply left out -- and visitors are invited to watch the process. (Photo)

Thanks for the concise story re Caldo de Piedra. It's fascinating to see the shrimp cooked by the hot stone. I understand the recipe was created by men in the village who decided that once a week they would give the women a day off from cooking. Clever men...created a dish that could be made without soiling a pot. No pot scrubbers they!
