I have this love/hate relationship with Oaxaca City and I need to get it off my chest.

There is no more astoundingly beautiful historic center just about anywhere than Oaxaca City surrounded by a congested and filthy urban corridor unacceptable to any civilized person . The other day I and my darlin wife and friends were there during a splendid sunshining day and about 3:00 to 4:00PM I have never seen such beauty as the afternoon sun shone on the historic buildings (which are not that old by the way) in the historical district but maybe that had something to do with the glasses of white wine I consumed with my outstanding lunch at the fine restaurant Casa Oaxaca which consisted of red snapper roasted with capers and what they called a tomato "marmalade" and some zucchini flowers and damn was that an excellent lunch even though the snapper was a bit tough but that chef (who I understand is German)is among the best in Mexico which, by the way, when it comes to fancy food, is not saying much but where chiles relleños are to die for but back to my original subject.

Oaxaca City is both the most impressive city in North America and the most depressing conurbation in the western hemisphere. What an exquisite architectural prize surrounded by anarchic filth and civil disunion. I love and detest this place simultaneously and if the reader disgrees with that assessment the reader has not seriously set foot in that huiman garbage dump that is also a work of art unsurpassed in this realm. Please, if you disagree, have at it publicly.

I like that about life here on the planet as it sits well with my recent experience of lying on my death bed surrounded by other humans of limited talent and coming out of that experience alive at least for now. Damn!

Next. The best beaches on the planet and they happen to be in Oaxaca State.
