A reminder - the tourism fair is next Saturday in Oaxaca City.

We have about 20 exhibitors confirmed, including the Donaji Restaurant near Mitla, Caldo de Piedra near Tule and the community of Tamazulapan. That's just in state. The fair is also attracting some guides from Mexico City and a community effort from Pantanos de Centla.

For those who have not attended, this is an excellent opportunity to pick up some travel tips from those who are not cyber-savvy. Rural tourism, of course, is not event-specific, so for those who are able to visit Oaxaca, come when you can.

One aviso - many of the exhibitors do not speak English. For most of us on this forum, that's to be expected. That said, last year we did have a misunderstanding with one visitor who was annoyed that some of the ejitarios did not speak English.

The fair takes place from 11am-6pm at Amigos del Sol, Libres #109. If you can come, please comment in this topic.

Brand new at this year's fair will be a children's paper recycling workshop from 12pm-2pm led by the generous folks from Blackbox.

Also new, the debut of a city map showing 'arboles notables' of Oaxaca City!

We are also very pleased that this year's fair is promoted by Oaxaca City's other fine languages schools

The hours of presentations will be confirmed at the start of the event. That said, here is the tentative agenda:

12:15-2pm - Paper Recycling - A hands-on workshop for kids of all ages
12:15-1pm - Tamazulapan - Learn how rural tourism in the Mixteca is being developed
1:15-2pm - Water Conservation - Lessons on building dry toilets in rural communities and conserving water in city hotels
3:15-4pm - Walk with the weavers - Teotitlán's community museum invites you to join weaver-led tours
4:15-5pm - Mezcal and Coffee Tourism - Visit agave fields and and coffee fincas

Online - For those not able to attend in person, keep an eye on Planeta.com as photos will be upload early Sunday.

Godawlmighty, Ron:

Children´s Paper Recycling Workshop?
Lessons on Building Dry Toilets? (AKA shitholes)
Walking with Weavers?
Maps to notable Trees ? (try looking up!)

My old and beautiful French/Spanish colonial city of Mobile and the old and beautiful Spanish colonial city Oaxaca have one thing in common. The current generation doesn´t deserve either of them.

Bring back APPO I say. At least they kept the blood flowing.

The yuppies are coming! The yuppies are coming!

The last thing they need in Mexico is a paper recycling workshop. Mexico has a better rate of paper recovery than either Canada or the USA. The whole country is an environmental disaster and you are going to teach kids how to make paper or recycle it?? Better to provide some food, clothing and a decent education. What dumb priorities!!

Actually, there are some successful paper making tallers in Oaxaca. I have visited some in San Agustin Etla. The handmade paper (and products) are truly beautiful. I even print photos on it and get interesting/creative results. It's a small industry, to be sure, but it does provide income for some people.
