Oaxaca Language Schools

Howdy Oaxaca. Iam considering attending one the Spannish immersion language schools in Oaxaca this coming mid-March for two weeks and had a few questions for the MexConn community. Can anyone recomend one of these schools? Iam planning on living with a local Mexian family, not sure which one, any recomendations? If Iam living and attending school down town, any worries about not enough water to shower? (I read here where there might not be enough water, I live in California, so used to quick short showers). How or where can I rent a car with a driver for a day trip to surrounding areas one time while Iam there and the going price? I should excerise 5 days per week, any health clubs where I can purchase a temp memberhip, I just need to use a bicycle machine and treadmill for a total of an hour per day,(price?). Good place to buy Oaxaca coffee beans to bring home? AA meetings in English and Spannish? Good sausa club to hear good music where a gringo is comfortable? Yep, this is alot of questions, any help will be greatly welcomed! Thanks, Skyline

There are a number of great schools in Oaxaca and it really depends on what you want from your education.

During last year's crisis, the schools featured on Planeta -- see the Directory of Spanish Language Schools -- formed their own association. I'd go with one of these.

Instituto Amigos del Sol
Instituto Cultural Oaxaca
Becari Spanish Language School
Solexico Language and Cultural Center
Academia Vinigulaza

Español Interactivo Language School

You're asking a lot of great questions, so I'd refer you to the Oaxaca page on Planeta and would encourage you to take a good look at the things to do section.

Water will probably be scarcer than ever in mid-March. Each year there seems to be less and less water sent into my cistern from the city. I've even had to buy a pipa (water tank) already. First time in six years. Tourism is really UP this holiday season and, unlike you, most travelers take long showers. Hotels rates have increased, I think, due to the fact that hotels have to buy water from the pipas. I think your time frame is during Semana Santa, which is also a high tourist time.

Ron's list of language schools is a good one.

You can easily find a driver (about 120 pesos an hour) once you get to Oaxaca. If you live with a family, they will be a valuable resource for most of your questions.
