I haven't heard anything lately about the 'rebuild' of the Zocalo. Has it been completed? What's the results?

I suppose it depends on your point of view. We were there in early August, after it had been reopened, although there was still work going on. We didn't think they did a bad job at all, although we questioned the choice of the modern art sculptures they have placed around the perimeter. And it was full of people, most of whom were enjoying the park and not particularly complaining.

I'm looking forward to seeing again after all the work is completed.

Ed

There are those who disagree, but I don't think it's so bad. Certainly would have been worse without public protest. Lots of big old trees left standing and new ones planted. All the pavers aren't in place yet. Poco a poco. Colorful flower gardens. No balloons which is negative or positive according to your personal preference. Tablecloths on some of the cafe tables...that weren't clothed before. I bet people who never saw the old zocalo will love the new one.
Geri....come on down. I have rooms for rent.

Hola!
This is my first day in this forum. My purpose here is to get travel information on Oaxaca since my wife to be and I are planning our honey moon for this coming March 2006. I don't really know where to start. I've checked some airline fares - they're outragous. If you guys can help me out, I would appreciate.
We would like to travel from New York City, NY. Any airlines, travel agents....you recommend?

Continental flies out of Newark into Mexico City and on to Oaxaca. Whenever I've checked, Continental seems to have the best prices. I got reservations for my sister in February for under $500 r.t. from Boston to Oaxaca, via Houston. That's a great route, since it bypasses immigration in Mexico City.

You are correct, fares are up there. I came to Oaxaca in Nov via AA for 396RT to Mexico City from Phoenix. Your fares will be much cheaper if you fly NY to MEX the take the comfortable 6hr bus from TAPO station in MEX to Oaxaca. About $30-40 US one way. You arrive in the middle of town.

The work on the Zocalo is now complete. I've written an essay

and I've updated the photo gallery

I suspect the poinsettas will not be a fixture for long. The joke here is 'when was the last time the pointsettas were watered? Answer: Noche buena'
