Wasn't on the coast, but definitely felt a strong tremor early this afternoon in Oaxaca City. Felt the whole house shake for about 6 seconds.

El Universal today reported that leaders of APPO are seeking asylum with the Catholic Church.

Y'know, not hearing much from Dodi & Geri the past few days makes me a bit nervous. Hope they are OK. I'm not there, but have concerns about both of them. Sorta wish they'd check in at least daily & let us know they haven't been caught up in the middle of the problems.

Hi Jonna,
I can't necessarily keep track in my mind where everyone is ('cept Bubba of course). The brain cells remaining are not working as efficiently as I'm used to. After reading the Oaxaca thread for so many days, I'm just naturally concerned if I don't see anything posted "as usual". Just hope those involved didn't involuntarily get mixed up in something beyond their control.

In partnership with the newspaper, El Universal, the Herald published the article below last Monday, November 6, entitled " A Oaxaca Score Card".

Although the Oaxaca situation is complicated, this article may help readers to know who some of the head-line players/groups involved in the conflict.

http://www.mexiconews.com.mx/21667.html

However keep in mind, the article does not tell the whole story...if indeed, the whole story could ever be known.

It's been suggested, that writing is never neutral. There is always a slant, even with author's who try to report objectively.

Hello Ron,

Day to day life here carries on quite normally.
Thanks for asking.
Seems to be a temporary lull in the action.

From what I've read, the governor has proposed a six point plan for Oaxaca, and continues to insist that he will not resign. Leaders of APPO claim that they fear they will be physically eliminated and the Catholic Church has offered them assylum.

That was a good article Wendy posted.

Well ok. Won't worry too much then (it's amazing the games ones mind can play on one). Was just like getting used to listening to Walter Cronkite in the old days reporting daily on the war and then all of a sudden, no more newscasts. Just made me wonder..

I know what you mean... APPO Radio, the student radio station at UNAM, has been off the (internet) air for a couple of days. At least the links I used are down.

Plus there has been daily shootings into the station. One student was hospitalized with serious gunshot wounds.

I was worrying about what might have happened to the students and La Profesora.

hi guys, i´m alive and well in Ajijic. I got a chance to join a busload of oaxacan artists to a folk art fair here..having a GREAT time...never been to this part of Mexico. It was a 22 hour bus ride due to getting lost and a breakdown. We go back on the SAME bus Sunday night.

I slipped away to an Internet Cafe to "catch up" on Oaxaca goings on...glad to hear that all is calm...I just read a few hysterical media articles, but people in Oaxaca seem to be carrying on as usual, according to my emails.

I know it´s a serious political bruhaha, but I expect life to be about the same when I return. Probably no one missed me, except you Ron, so thanks....makes me feel a bit less invisible.

Well great, Geri. Nice to hear you had fun, if that's what you can call a bus trip in Mexico. Also nice you'll be back to your war correspondent duties.
It's good to hear everything is fine in Dogpatch.

Home again. The return trip only took 17 hours, because we didn't get lost or break down. There seemed to be some PFP "on duty" at various points as we drove into the city. They are preventing blockades from going up again. My street is eerily quiet. Maybe it's because the buses no longer detour past my house. Can I be missing them? My, how the human body/spirit adapts!!!

The folk art fair in Ajijic was a big success. The Oaxacan artists did well, which is a good thing because artists here are really suffering due to lack of tourism, as you can imagine We were treated like celebrities at the fair!

When there's something to report, I'll be back on my post as "war correspondent." I have a lot of news articles to catch up on and face a big job weeding out the truths from untruths.

Here's a brief summary of a few things I've read, regarding the situation in Oaxaca.

- The PRD is apparently helping APPO by putting up blockades in highways throughout the state. This was reported in an article by Noticias this morning.

http://www.noticias-oax.com.mx

- Another article about PRD's soon to be more active involvement

http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/notas/387630.html

- Public School is "supposed" to start in some regions of Oaxaca on November 16th.

- The catholic church decided in the end to deny assulym to the leaders of APPO

- An attack occurred against a McDonalds at Plaza de Valle in Oaxaca,
as Molotov Cocktails were thrown in and broke a couple of
windows in the children's area of the restaurant. I saw that the windows of the restuarant were boarded up with plywood as we drove by this afternoon, on the way to the airport. (Had to circumvent a few blockades to get to the airport.) A Burger King in Plaza de Valle was also vandalized earlier this month.

- Noticias had an article this morning, about a 14-year-old kid nicknamed "Amor" that participated in the fighting at the University against the PFP. He attributed his fighting skills to what he's learned in the barracades (e.g. - making Molatov Cocktails) and watching movies like "Rambo" :(

- Processo did a cover story on La Appo this week. A good portion of the magazine covers events in Oaxaca and analysis. One article refers to Flavio Sosa, APPO's spokesman, as a "chameleonlike" leader, as he's changed political affiliations several times. Another article talks about Ulises Ruiz, and how he promoted himself during his campaign for governor, as the "Benito Juarez of the 21st Century."

- Here's another article on Sosa. Apparantly, he worked as a dishwasher in a diner in New York City at one point.
