We will be in Oaxaca from January 31 to February 17. Adult couple looking for an apartment with kitchen and garden convenient to La Merced or Sanchez Pascua Markets. We know the city and are used to getting around on foot.

Geri, I won't attempt to answer for GRANCOOKS, but I will for me....

I am a frequent contributor here on Mexconnect... have been for years. But if you look at my account, you won't find my email address... and nothing more than where I live NOB. And I don't consider it being 'secretive'. Just smart.

Probably if you knew what I know about the Internet and Spam and Viruses and .... you might be less likely to list your email address everywhere.

Your mileage may vary.

I'm just the opposite -- completely open, except I don't list my street address or phone number. They are available to anyone who wants to send me cookies, cakes, pies or money. Smile

I'm with you, Rolly. But everyone has his/her own way. I am just more open, like you, but with certain precautions. I think that basically most people are good. That's what I CHOOSE to believe.

Having been a member of Mex Connect since 1997, and also having met other members in person and visited/hosted them at home, I am not too concerned about dealing with other old timers. I am pretty honest about my personal situation but then I don't have much money in the bank, no credit cards, and an identity no one else would want. That's protection enough for me!

Besides, I want the people who read Mex Connect to feel that we as long-time posters are legitimate and that readers can trust our advice, our experience, and our suggestions. None of us are in this for the money.

And maybe if you actually lived SOB full time like many of us do, you would change your way of thinking about other people! Not a bad thing, and perhaps one of the foremost recommendations for moving to Mexico.

Maybe so, but I don't exactly understand how you came to know "how I think about other people". Have we met?

My comment basically came from my past profession in computer security and continuing with the growth of the Internet, and understanding that there are some bad folks lurking out there just itching to take advantage of one's propensity to assume that all is well, even when some things are not (waaay to long a sentence, but.....).

As Sergeant Phil Esterhaus of Hill Street Blues used to remind his fellow Officers before they hit the street,
"Let's be careful out there".

Carron - let me assure you, having met Rick S on Mexconnect, you couldn't wish for a nicer fellow, laid back, Mexico lover but very sensible - hence his caution. As Carl Franz has a wonderful in The People's Guide to Mexico, which I can't track down right now, but something along the lines of taking precautions is not being paranoid, but simple common sense. Taking on line precautions is basic common sense.

Just being a poster on this site for a long time does not necessarily make one a "good guy" although I do think that most of us who have been here for some years are just fine.

I wonder whatever happened to Grancooks? I help many people find apartments in Oaxaca (not an easy task) but I DO have to talk via email with them. Don't know how to do it any other way. I may travel for a couple of weeks in January if anyone is interested in renting my house. I'll put it on the rental forum also. Have had good luck with that.

Some folk elect to turn off the option of being sent PMs.
Not saying that this is the case this time tho'.
