Sorry Rolly, I was so busy trying to translate what they were saying on the radio that I just tried to paraphrase the just of what was said in the articles... but I see that if I leave some things in spanish only it would be annoying.

My only defense is that things were happening so quickly ;-)

Btw... the people in the cemetary near the university who were observing day of the dead also were pepper gassed.

And the radio statio continues to say that the police forces and helicopters are returning and may not have entirely surrendered the attacks.

They are asking for a Red Cross ambulance to take a gravely injured person to the hospital.

Also they are asking the the people confront the police that should be leaving but who are coming in closer and trying to break the line of defenders. The PFP broke through a place in the line with 3 tanks and the radio announcers are asking the people to resist and maintain the defense but to be very careful.

They are advising use of carbonated water or refrescos like coca-cola to wash eyes, wipe noses, and sooth throats affected from pepper gas.

Unfortunately I think they also believe what geri says is the case... .that Ulises has only finished with the appetizer.

In a weird sort of way, I wish I were there. I've been through four city riots -- two in Los Angeles -- Watts and Rodney King; and the two in Memphis -- one before and one after M L King was assassinated.

Dodi, I think we're all glued to our screens reading your accounts. I know I've had goosebumps just reading through everything you've posted; and I'm kind of with Rolly, for some strange perverse reason, I'd like to be there to observe. Thank you so much for your effort.

Me too Gayla. I'm trying to control myself from going off topic to compare the effects of pepper gas vs. tear gas, both of which I have first hand experiance during the anti-vietnam war movement demonstrations in the U.S.

At least I can try to promulgate information directly from those on the scene as an antidote to the spinning and disinformation that's already being dispersed in the mainstream media.

JA@@@@@@!!!!!

The PFP has surrendered!!!!! just now!!!!!! VICTORIA!!!!!!!

Tune in to the radio station even those who don't speak spanish will understand the emotion!!!!!!!

The helicopters continue to gas the demonstrators, but the PFP is in retreat!

bulletin: they are entreating desperately for ambulances and medics

2nd bulletin a panteon (one of the graveyards) is being attacked and the radio station is saying that even after this battle victory it is not over and everyone need to remain vigilant, organized, and present.

Now there is some debate from the front line about letting the PFP and police leave the area because 1) they still have detained demonstrators 2) they might use the opportunity to take more detainees to prison or to the military base and 3) they have committed crimes resulting in many wounded victims.

So some people don't want to let the PFP leave just yet.

But I do have to go now de todos modes.

Hmmm... el pueblo unido nunca ser vencido.... well, I guess it's true at least today.

Dodi, after I read your thread and replied, I wondered what was being reported in the media here NOB. Surprisingly, not a whole heck of a lot. I couldn't find anything on the NYTimes site. Here's a link to a Rueter's piece I found on the MSNBC site, and I had to dig a little for that.

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/15001507/

The reporting in the SD Union/Tribune has been fairly even but leaning somewhat more to the government side of things; meaning that the reporting has presented the protestors POV as well and not been dismissive of it. The only piece I could find just now on the U/T site was this AP wire story. This same piece is also running on the CNN News page as well.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/...co-oaxacaunrest.html

The Rueter's piece is closer to the radio reports you posted, the AP piece is not nearly as close and more clearly supports the intervention.

Quite a contrast, no?

The persons on the radio who encouraged unarmed people to form human chains and confront federal police armed with guns, billy clubs, and pepper gas, should bear the responsibility for injuries and deaths, if any occur. Maybe this is what they want....martyrs for their cause. This truly a sad episode.

APPO radio is reporting right now (4.35PM CST) that truckloads of federales have been seen en route from Puebla to reinforce the PFP already in Oaxaca. They're saying that rebuffing the PFP from taking the University was only one battle and there will be more (and worse) battles to come.

The announcers also are saying that APPO has taken the zócalo in Mexico City.

They are asking for electrician's gloves so that the tear gas bombs can be picked up and thrown back at the PFP.

They're asking for supporters to bring ready-to-eat food for those who haven't had anything to eat during the day.

I've been at work all day, but in between classes (I teach English to foreign students), I've run to a computer to find out what's really going on in Oaxaca. What I feel as I read this thread is a kind of horrified excitement at the events unfolding there. It's definitely history in the making, and we all have a front-row seat, thanks to DoDi2 and geri. If only some real change comes as a result of what's been going on.
