New Years Eve in Mérida

Will there be anything special that visitors might not be aware of in Mérida for Feliz Año? This will be our first time there, travelling from Mazatlán via Ciudad México.

Also, if we rent a car, how long is the drive to Tulum?

Thanks!

http://portal.sct.gob.mx gives a time of approximately 3 hours from Merida to Tulum. The route goes from Merida to Valladolid on the toll road then through Coba and on to Tulum. For more details see the above government site.

As to whats happening in Merida on New Years, there are a lot of family parties and celebrations. There will be noise as fireworks are a part of all celebrations, but as to the city providing anything special, I do not recall anything. There may be some fireworks in the Plaza Principal but most of the cities celebrations at this time of the year are family and neighborhood oriented. You need to wear red or yellow underwear and eat 12 grapes at midnight.
