Need help/advice/info/etc

ˇBuenos días!

Hubby and I are coming down to Guadalajara and Mérida in September and I'm hoping he'll enjoy the country as much as I do--enough to move! Anyway, I'd really appreciate a little info/advice on a few different things:

1) Hubby will be about 4 months post-recovery from an amputation of the foot (below the knee) and he's a bit concerned about the availability/quality of medical treatment. He won't need it while he's there and should be pretty recovered (using a prosthesis), but he is interested in general info about doctors/hospitals, etc and how comparable are they? For anything major, we'd go back up to the states due to our insurance, but any personal experiences would be appreciated. Also, if you're on medication in the states, is it pretty easy to get the same meds there (ie, synthroid for thyroid)?

2) Where do you recommend I take him to truly get a sampling of the area, both bad and good? What are some of the "must-see"things? (Chichen Itzá is definitely one)

3) What's the best way to find out about all of the organizations, meetings, etc, that are available? Is there some kind of schedule of events in a paper or something similar? Is there a strong ex-pat community? We're really interested in the coast but we've heard great things about Mérida).

4) Anything else that you can suggest/recommend/advise? This is for retirement planning, we don't have any intentions of working but would be interested in volunteering.

Many thanks in advance!

Cheri (another wanna-be, hope-to-be)

I have lived in Cancun going on 17 years now and I remember when if you had anything wrong with you, you went to Merida for medical treatment and, although Cancun has grown and now has a lot of first-class medical facilities and care, Merida still has more and more specialized it seems. As far as general information about living and retiring in Mexico, I would suggest you go to http://www.mexconnected.com/...ivinginmexindex.html and read all you can find there, focusing on the experience of others who have done it alread. Then check back with any questions you might have.

Jim,

I really appreciate the link (have already read many of them) but I was hoping for a bit more personal information. You know, why you would recommend one place but not another or areas to avoid because they're really hilly/cobblestoned/etc for hubby. Also, any viewpoints/opinions/experiences about that area would also be appreciated. Articles are nice and they give a lot of info, but personal experiences seem to make a stronger impression because they're not as abstract. If you don't mind my asking, would you tell me why you chose Cancun and not somewhere like Acapulco or Guadalajara? I should mention that we're looking more to the smaller beach towns (none of which I can spell at this point) nearer to Progreso.

Thanks so much,

Cheri
