Music in Merida?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I am a musician in California wanting to spend my winters in Mexico. I was wondering what the music scene is like in Merida. I play Cuban Son and would like to meet up and play with other musicians. Anyone living there got any feedback ? Clubs ect? Also what about San Cristobal? Thanks, Dave

I may not be answering the question that you asked, but danzon is very popular in Veracruz city, with clubs, bands, dancing in the squares, etc. Veracruz (actually Boca del Rio) is associated with Augustine Lara, don't miss the museum, the Casita Blanca, but his music is mostly played on recordings, not live, which is a shame.

I don't remember much music in San Cristobol or Chiapas other than marimba music, which is very pleasant to listen to. I can't help you on Merida, I have not been there for many years.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. Do you live in Veracruz or spend much time there? I would be interested in the name of any bands or clubs there that feature Cuban music. Thanks, dave

I realized that when I said the word club, that was ambiguous. I did not mean nightclub. I meant club in the form of association of enthusiasts. I remember attending a danzon event in a park in Veracruz, which was clearly sponsored by an association of danzon enthusiasts. I also saw danzon events that appeared to be sponsored by the city. I have also heard an NPR story about danzon in Veracruz. I am not familiar with the Cuban music scene in Veracruz, or even whether or not there is a Cuban music scene. I don't remember seeing any evidence of links to Cuba in Veracruz, although Cuba is relatively close. I am mostly reporting on what I heard and saw on the street, as we do not generally go to nightclubs.

No, I am not a resident of Veracruz, I was making some comments based on a week spent there a few years ago. I don't recall any residents of Veracruz city on this forum, although I can think of a few who live in Veracruz state.

Good luck, perhaps someone with more information on Veracruz or Merida will appear. You might also consider looking on some music forums, doing Google searches, etc., but perhaps you have already done that. You might also try reposting your question on the mexconnect forum related to the Gulf of Mexico.

There is a very strong afinity for Cuban music in Veracruz, from the Son, Danzon and very much Salsa. There is even a Salsa band belonging to the Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa. We are still enjoying the last days of Junio Musical here in Xalapa which ends tomorrow Sunday June 26th. Here is one group that will be playing...
18:00 hrs. Centro Cultural Los Lagos.
GRAN BAILE DE CLAUSURA DEL FESTIVAL

Presenta: Orquesta Renegado Pop.
Director: Sergio Martínez & La Orquesta Universitaria de Música Popular (OUMP).
Director: Rodolfo Sánchez.

Come to Xalapa and Veracruz to enjoy the incredible music scene.
¡Hasta pronto, amigos costeños!

I was in Mérida for carnival in 2004 and there were many dance clubs, in the sense Richard meant, that were in the parades. Of course there were bands as well but I really can't tell you much about them. Mérida is a very musical city with performances and concerts every night and much of the music I heard had a caribbean or samba type beat. Afraid I can't tell you more than that though.

Armando Manzanero has a weekly television program from Merida. He features local and international musicians. You probably can get a lot of information at canal 22.

I watch canal 22 on satellite link tv. You can write to manzanero at manzanero@22mx.tv. In his program I've seen la trova yucateca, Maria Medina, Tania Libertad, David Bisbal, Sergio Esquivel and others. Interestingly he always introduces a "nuevo Valor". Good luck in your travels.
