Medical Tourism

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hello, I am a graduate student at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee studying medical tourism: the use of Mexican medical services by American citizens. One of the questions that I am researching is where people find out information regarding what doctors to visit and where to go. I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions or offer an account of their experience using the Mexican Healthcare System? Thanks.
Matt

I noticed that this post was originally in the Southern Mexico section and as a Mérida resident I can answer for that area. Medical tourism is big business here. Many people come to Mérida for dental work and plastic surgery. In fact there are a few dentists in town that specialize in "vacation dental work" and whole families come here to visit and see their dentist. In the tourist magazines, hotels are advertising that they are close to the hospitals. We have at least three quality hospitals with affiliations in the United States. This is a growing industry and I believe that this area actively is pursuing that market.

There's quite a few types of medical tourism at this time in different cities.

The OP might have to 'specialize'.

Dental, surgical, cosmetic...?

I have noticed several articles in Yucatan Today. Do you know of any other places where people advertise?

Locally I have only seen the Yucatan Today specifically direct its ads to foreigners. There are hundreds of Mexican dentists who advertise on the Internet however. I am sure that reconstructive surgery would produce similar results. The newspaper that we get(El Diario de Yucatan) is often full of medical advertisements but that is not directed to foreigners of course.
There is a local web site called Merida Insider where you might possibly get some first hand information from people who have traveled here for procedures. Most of my information is anecdotal as I am not traveling here to use these services.

A friend of mine who already lives in the SMA area wants "lasix" eye surgery. Anyone have a recommendation for a good doctor/clinic in central Mexico?

I was wondering what characteristics I should look for when choosing a physician in Mexico?

1. Look at his office and see and see if he has a large clientele. A popular doctor is not necessarily a better doctor but is a better choice than a doctor whose office is always empry.
2. Ask others in the community. 3. Check his credentials. 4. Know your medical problems and talk them over with a new doctor so you can get a feel of how knowledgeable he is.
