Living/Telecommuting from Oaxaca

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hello,

Well, I've somehow talked my company into letting me telecommute
from Oaxaca City and will be relocating there with wife and kids in May.

Seeking the following recommendations:

Good private schools in Oaxaca for kids (entering 3rd and
8th grades). The kids know Spanish.

High speed Internet Connectivity. Cost? Best Provider?

General cost of longterm housing rentals in Oaxaca. Or, if somebody on this forum has a house to rent longterm, to a family who will take care of the place and pay ontime, let me know. Looking around the price range of $400-$600 US a month. Will be coming down for two weeks in March to investigate.

Wow... what company do you work for and how can I start working for them!?

Interesting post, I don't have any information to offer here, but I would be interested in the responses.

Be careful what you ask for Caarina :)
But, if you work computer support for an obscure software product, and that company gets bought out by a larger company, that gets bought out by an even larger company, which closes down local offices, which forces employees to move or work from home, you too, may find yourself working in Oaxaca, Mexico. Since I was already working from home, I asked if I could work a few miles further south, and surprisingly, they said yes.

My wife and I have been thinking about the move for several years. Fortunately, by luck or fate, this opportunity arose.

However, I think there are a number of ways to do this. I asked people on this forum a few years back if anybody worked in Mexico, or worked parttime in the US and lived the other half of the year in Mexico. I was encouraged by the number of varied responses that I got back. (One person was a tree cutter for half the year and lived the other half in Mexico.) I think jobs that you can telecommute with (i.e. - software programmer, software support, writing/editing) lend themselves to these types of opportunities.

I'm most envious of people that have the ability to work half the year in the US and the other half in Mexico pursuing interests that they really love. As I'm not independently wealthy, I'd like to eventually transition into this type of lifestyle in the future.
