Ideas for my first night

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi Everyone,

On the 21st of this month I will be flying in to begin my first
six-month (or more) stay in Cancun.
I am (as I'm sure you will understand) getting more and more
excited as the day approaches and I am grateful for all the
information I have gotten here at the site that has helped ease
my transition and prepare me for my stay. The one thing I
could use some help on is; ideas on where and how to spend
my first evening there. I have been there as a tourist enough
to know where to go to see wild college students and all that crowd
but I am hoping that you all might be kind enough to give me
a little tutelage on the perfect first evening for a brand new
ex-pat. It will be a Wednesday and I don't have to get up too
early the next day.
I'd like to hit some places off the tourist path, where I can hear
some good stories by some old salts. Is there a good Wednesday
night hang-out?
I will save the "where's a good place to eat" post for another day
because on my first night I want to work on a good hangover!
About me, 40 year old ex-bouncer, University of Texas alum.,
lifetime Texan, ex-car salesman, ex-insurance salesman, future
time share salesman (oh man I really shouldn't admit to those last
three huh) current luckiest-guy-all-my-friends-know-to-be-moving-
to-Mexico.
I like most kinds of music and I LOVE to sing Karaoke.

Oh and one other thing, is there ANY way to keep from getting pulled
over in my rental and having to give ten bucks to get my license
back out of the cop's shirt pocket? (My experience on at least half
of all my trips there before.)
Thanks for the help
Big Techs

Hi, Bigtechs.

For most of those of us who live here, Cancun is not the "every-night's-a-party" town you seem to expect it to be. You might check at http://www.cancunassist.com/forums/living/ as they have a good crowd of expats there and their night out is Friday night at La Taberna on Yaxchilan Ave. starting at about 7 p.m.

As for not having problems with the police, the best way is to obey all of the traffic regulations including not driving over the speed limit or while under the influence, having all the proper car and ID papers, etc.

Suerte!

Well Jim, thanks for the response but perhaps you read a little too
much into my post. I asked for a good place to celebrate my
arrival I didn't say anything about thinking all the ex-pats were
there to party their lives away and wanting to do the same.

Then I posted what I thought was a funny question to open up
a string of humorus stories by veterans of the "la mordida"
experience.
I know perfectly well how to drive but as Esperanza says here...

http://mexconnected.com/...tring=mordida;#38474

the police do have a tendency to "shake you down for imaginary
offense(s)"

So please don't judge me by a few sentences, you wouldn't want
anyone to do that to you.

I have to agree with Jim in that if you pay attention to speed limits and traffic signals you shouldn't have too many problems. Where I live, the transitos are always out playing with their new radar guns. I am approaching my 5th year full time and haven't been stopped by any type of police. We have one foreign plated vehicle and one Mexican plated vehicle and I drive both regularly.

I think if I was stopped half of the time I ventured out as you mention happens to you, I would take the bus to save the grief.

OK, I'm a salesman and I'm prone to hyperbole. In 9 visits it has happened twice.
If you consider an average of five days per visit and at least six different trips
per day (I dislike busses and taxis) then it really isn't half of every time I drive.

But, so all of you will feel safe in light of my being a drunk and hell-on-wheels,
you will be relieved to know I am leaving my dump truck in the states.
LOL
