Hwy. 307 south of Tulum road conditions

Can't Post |
We spent Christmas in Chetumal and we're heading back to Cancun Friday. Hwy. 307 south of Tulum is being widened to 4 lanes! When it's done, it should be 4 lane concrete highway all the way from Cancun to Chetumal. This will be great when it's finished, but it's a very painful, and slow, drive right now from Tulum to Chetumal. Lot's of construction, potholes, and all kinds of road hazards. The worst part is south of Carrillo Puerto. Don't make the mistake of driving this route at night, as we did!

We went to Mahahual yesterday, and the road from Limones to Chetumal is even worse than 307. Again, it's being widened to 4 lanes. In the short run, this trip is going to be very slow go; but in the long run, having a 4 lane highway to Mahahual should increase tourism and make getting there a breeze. For some reason, they're using asphalt to pave this road. Again, I'd advise anyone against making this drive at night. I can't stress how bad the road currently is. I hope everyone had a good Chrismas and I wish everyone a Happy New Year!

Thanks for the update, we make that drive every year and saw the construction last year north of Chetumal- it was a bit slow in places then. We will be making that drive next month- may try the Merida route for once! Thanks!

We came through there twice in the last few weeks, I don't remember any construction between Carrillo Puerto and the Mahahual cutoff? There was a long dirt detour between Limones and Chetumal. They are also working on the road from 307 to Escarcega although most of that work is in Quintana Roo and not the Campeche part. My thought was that they are expanding the road from the new cruise ship dock in Mahahual to the ruins around Chicana which are also being restored and have new 'artesina shopping' buildings up but not occupied. I remember thinking that Carrillo Puerto was going to get left out in all this expansion.

They have also done a lot of road work in Escarcega, they put in some HUGE topes that are killers for a long wheelbase like an RV. There was a small sign for a truck route going east but we didn't see any sign going west. We had to go sideways across the topes in our 27' RV in order not to knock off our valve and leave the contents of our black tank on the street (perhaps that would have been a fitting tribute to the new topes). These are not your usual topes, they are at least 2' high and about 4' wide.

Oops! I just noticed that in my original post I said

What I meant to say was the road from Limones to Mahahual is worse than 307. You're right about the worst part being south of Limones, but I've been told that the construction will continue to head northward all the way to Tulum. I didn't know about the road to Escarcega, thanks for the heads up. I'm glad we didn't venture up that way this year. I checked out your website, it's very nice.
